Fences 5 - cannot move folders within a fence (Fences not locked, Windows auto arrange off) - something is wrong with sorting/organizing

I've been running Fences for years, all versions and currently on V5. Suddenly, this past week or so, folders inside a fence can't be moved as I need to, usually putting higher priority items at the bottom inside a given fence. Uninstalled and reinstalled yesterday, restarted laptop, still no change. Windows not set to "Auto Arrange" , I did enable the regedit to show the 'Lock Fences' feature removed in v5, but that doesn't have any affect. No clue what's happened but hard to use Fences now with this bizarre issue which is multiplied because I have about 12 fences on my desktop - many folders within each. Please advise

N.B: Just noted that this only happens on one (1) of my 3 monitors, my other two, I can move icons around without issue

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your system and issue.

  1. Your Windows10 or 11 full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe.
  2. Fences full version number.
  3. Is this issue on Desktop Fences or Portal Fences?
  4. Does the Icons move as you click and drag and move itself back to its old position or it does not react to your click and drag at all?
  5. Did you have recently install a new software or update something that also introduce something onto your desktop area.

Thank you.

folders inside a fence can't be moved as I need to
End of quote
Just to clear any confusion here. There are two kinds of fences. Regular fences with shortcuts and folder portals. In folder portals, you cannot move folders. Only choose how they are sorted.

Also, be sure that the sorting is set to "None" in a regular fence:

    Version 23H2 (bld 22631.4460)
  2. Fences full version number
    V 5.84

    Desktop

The icons do move as I click/drag, but they don't land in the position I want to move the folder to inside the fence

No, nothing at all - other than any Win updates

I don't use portal and None is the setting in any of my fences - I like have the option to sort/store however

Interested to see a video of this happening so we understand the issue better.

Basj,
Please refer to the linked video below. This is one of my fences I use daily and as you see, I simply can't sort out
why it's doing this when I move folders around. One folder inside this fence acts completely different from another, quickly
breaking however I wish to sort the folders inside the fence.

Other fences (on the same screen or my 2nd monitor) do not do this - very bizarre.

Please advise when you can

Thanks,
Todd

Thank you for the video, that do look strange. Just to check as mentioned what is your sort setting for that Fences?

Basj,

Here's the Fences setting  - nothing set, which I almost never do for any of my fences
(and uninstall/reinstalled as noted prior)

N.B:

So when I drag this fence to my laptop screen OR my 1st monitor (of 2 external)
Fences no longer does this weird sorting?
When I moved this fence back to my 2nd monitor, it resumes this weird sorting again?

Both of my external monitors are the same (ASUS) model/resolution/etc...

May I know more details on the monitor with an issue.

  1. Resolutions.
  2. Scale factor. (100%,150% etc)
  3. Connection type, HDMI, DPI, VGA etc

Thanks much Basj

If it helps, I've been on Fences since day 1, whatever WinOS that was
and on multiple monitors for that same time, never saw this issue.
The one variable this time, is the difference in resolution
of my laptop now being so much higher - so perhaps Windows
recommendation to scaling in W11 to each of the monitors is the issue?

Just to dig deeper on your issue. If you swap the connection cable between the two Asus monitors does the issue change?

Basj,

I've done that, even to the point of picking up a new pair of cables - no changes either way
with either the existing cables or the new ones
