Icon positioning within a fence window

I love the idea of Fences, and have tried it a few times, but have been deeply frustrated that I couldn't position icons myself within a Fence window.

I know several people, like me, who arrange icons in a specific order (including gaps) to indicate workflow. This is particularly useful with over 500 icons on screen, representing some 80 different workflows (which is why Fences seems a really good idea)

I've had bad experiences of uninstalling trial versions of Fences in the past.

So before I install the latest trial version I would love to know if the latest version of Fences has been improved so that I can manually arrange icons (and have gaps) within a Fence window.

Many thanks

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Unfortunately, this is not an option in Fences. There were few feature request on this one already put in by others, but, so far nothing yet on this one. We, however, appreciate your feedback.

Thank you.

You could try Start11v2 which offers a full screen start menu, in the Windows 10 style, on which you can arrange icons manually. You can also use the non-full page menu and create multiple pages. There are a lot of customization features in Start11v2 that allow you to create just the look you want.

There is a 30-day trial available at https://www.stardock.com/products/start11/

I was one of those that put in the feature request years ago - it strikes me as an odd oversight.

Thanks - I did look at this, and watched a number of videos - customisation features seemed to be more about the look, rather than basic functionality, which is why I wanted to see documentation.

Basically, I'm not after a "look" - what the desktop looks like doesn't matter, I want better grouping in project-based windows.

So I'll stick with my own version, which sort of works, but is clumsy and involves managing windows and multiple desktops in Windows 10 using vb.net software I wrotel

Thanks anyway

This is just one example of what you can do with Start11v2 with the Full Screen start menu. You can adjust the color backgrounds to all be the same, or each projects group a different color. These have a background texture added, but you can use a solid color. As I said above, it is very customizable.

Thanks - that's really useful. Can I rearrange and visually group those groups?

I'd show a screen shot, but somehow all my icons got rearranged and they don't mean anything at the moment.

Am I right in thinking that this will appear without pressing START, and across all multiple desktops?

This may well be a way forward.

Yes, you can rearrange groups.

This is a start menu, so yes you have to click the start button or press the Win key on your keyboard. Since it is a start menu it will appear on all virtual desktops. There is a way to to create multiple pages on the start menu, and set default pages to open with specific virtual desktops.

The best way forward would be to download the 30-day trial and play around with it.

Thanks - appreciate that, but the fact that it is a true Start Menu (so needs triggering) doesn't work for me.

Thanks for taking the time
