An alternative method for now would be to do this:

Which is an embeded image pointing to the same place as the winky in the list on the right when you compose a message...I don't think bandwidth stealing from the same site will be a problem since the image is tiny and it's already displaced on the page so it should be just one extra http get telling the browser to just re-use the image from the cache...

Whats the alt+# for the semi-colon character? Maybe if we used that, it would work.
