Fences 3 vs. 6 and Windows 10 to 11

I'm about to upgrade Win 10 Pro to 11 and so am thinking about my desktop and Fences. I have the latest version 3 (3.1.6.1) and am eligible for upgrade pricing. Starting with the early versions of Fences, I used to hide some desktop icons. For the last few years, however, I haven't and now just check new icons to "Exclude from Quick-Hide" and primarily use Fences snapshot ability as a backup in case something goes haywire, as it occasionally does. Given this usage, is there any reason to go to Fences 6 at this time?

Hello,
Few points:

  1. Do know that Fences 3 is not fully compatible with Windows 11
  2. Fences 6 can do anything that Fences 3 can. And from what I know your saved layout should carry over to Fences 6.
  3. Fences has upgrade its layout engine to better support on user with Multimonitor system since Fences 5.
  4. Fences 6 introduce tabs which clearly significant on how you can organize your desktop shortcut icons etc.

If you interested to know more on how Fences 6 will improve your workflow, I recommend you do the 30 days free trial. Fences 6 are compatible with Windows 10.

Thanks. What does Fences 3 is "not fully compatible" Win 11 specifically entail so far?

I am not Dev, I am not sure why it is not. But, for reference you can refer here: https://forums.stardock.com/505717/stardock-app-compatibility.

And, you can browse through the forum to see what other says about Fences 3 on Windows 11: https://forums.stardock.com/search;Fences%203%20issue%20on%20Windows%2011/user;-1/category;501/post;-1/date;all/sortby;relevance;desc/tags;null

Thanks for the links. In addition to the overall impression given by others, the one with 3.1.3 who had fenced and unfenced icons gathering in one corner of the screen on startup is familiar. While I don't have any fences, I had the same problem earlier this week when upon replacing my 13-year-old Dell 1920x1200 monitor with a Samsung of similar specs. Updating to 3.1.6.1 solved it.

For the user who had 3.1.6.1 and icons move around on startup, you suggested unchecking auto arrange in Windows.  I don't use that, but unfortunately that user never followed up with the outcome.

Question: In the upgrade from versions 3 to 6, are the snapshots maintained?

As someone who seems to recall paying around $5 and $10 for early versions of Fences, the alternatives of taking a sub, something I try to avoid, or paying $25 for a single version aren't appetizing.

End of genegold's quote

Yes, I believe it will, as mentioned above in my first reply point number 2.
