Issue with taskbar button grouping in Mozilla Firefox

Issue with taskbar button grouping

Currently, taskbar buttons for Mozilla Firefox in Incognito mode do not group together when the program is opened; the grouping effect usually only kicks in once I open Windows Explorer.

Can you help me solve this problem?

Hi hugoe77,

Thanks for posting. This is likely due to Windows treating Firefox's Private Browsing as a separate application.   I can reproduce your findings, but in my testing, it does occur regardless of if Start11 is installed or not.  As such, I do not expect there is more we could do.  However, we will have it noted.

Internal reference: ODNT-12483

Regarding the issue with reference number ODNT-12483, the problem does not occur with the Star11 taskbar.

I checked the Star11 settings and found that if I disable the taskbar enhancements, the problem disappears.

If I re-enable the taskbar enhancements, the problem returns.

As far as I can see, the taskbar button grouping function doesn't take Firefox in Incognito mode into account.

Hi Hugoe77,

To be clear, I don't see any uncombined Private Browser taskbar buttons in your screenshots.  That is expected behavior.  Please see my screenshot below and let us know if you mean something other than this.

As you can see from my image, these two sessions are combined:

You may notice, however, the normal Firefox browser is separated from them.  This behavior is the same whether Start11 is being used or not.  This is what we have logged.  I do not expect this is something we can fix, as it is simply something Firefox does unique to other browsers.

Here is a screenshot showing that I am in Incognito mode in Firefox, but it isn't grouping on the taskbar.

I know that Firefox handles normal mode and Incognito mode independently.

I'm not reproducing this, and I'm not sure how you are.  You might have different extensions/themes/custom settings with Firefox itself, or perhaps you pinned the applications to the taskbar in an unusual way.

One clue could be where it says "about:privatebrowsing" on your browser tab, where for me that says (as it normally would) "New Private Tab".  Another clue could be the fact that your normal Firefox browser has the underline/highlight to indicate that one has focus in Windows.  When you're using the Private browser, that should underline the Private taskbar button.

You could try typing "about:support" in your address bar to investigate/troubleshoot if there's an issue with Firefox itself, and you could try unpinning then pinning the applications to your taskbar again to see if that helps.

Another suggestion (if necessary and possible) could be a test in Windows Sandbox.  That might help to isolate how exactly to reproduce the issue.  Without clear steps resulting in a way to reproduce this, I'm afraid we've reached the limit to what we can suggest.
