Downloading problems??

I dunno if this is just me or if this is how WB now has this site set up. I go to download something and it takes me to a new window that says, "Thanks for enjoying WB and all our stuff blahblah now subscribe to us and send us money." Do I have to send in money just to download a windowblind's skin now? I dun use everything, I just ike modifying the look of my computer. Just wondering, if that's the case I'll work on something myself and just let other people pay for their stuff.

The 50 megabytes you already downloaded is a pretty generous start. Bear in mind you don't HAVE to pay the exhorbitant price of $0.83 per month for two years of access (or whatever it works out to), you could just buy the cheapest Stardock program you can find and, unless I'm mistaken, you'll get a year's subscription to WC.

When you purchase any Stardock software, you get unlimited downloads here at WinCustomize, but it is not a WinCustomize Subscription. A WinCustomize Subscription https://www.wincustomize.com/resources.asp?cmd=5 is $19.95 for 2-years and in addition to the unlimited Downloads, you get two premium WB skins, Kryptonite https://www.wincustomize.com/subscription/kryptonite.jpg and XP Augustus https://www.wincustomize.com/subscription/XPAugustus.jpg and you become a user level-4, which will allow you to rate other work on this website.

katze, looks like you've been here a little longer then most who have topped out their downloads so i'm going to appeal to your sensible side: support the site, enjoy unlimited downloads

if you like to modify the look of your computer, which is the intent of all stardock's object desktop programs, shelling out the bucks for just one of these programs would really benifit you. i assume you're using windowblinds trial version. if you get the full version, you'll have more customization options, and unlimited downloads.

another way to look at it is, how often do you buy a video game? this stuff costs less than most video games and you can enjoy it forever.. no brainer hope you come back and keep downloading

You like what you see. You're using the software and downloading skins. Now support the site and become one of the beautiful people.

To be honest I don't buy allot of anything. I can't afford it, any of it. $20 is what goes to my groceries on a good day. When I joined it was free and there was a reason for me joining. It wasn't a leecher site it was just something fun, not the complicated mass it's become. I'm 21, 29 weeks pregnant and moving at the same time. Maybe I am a big penny pincher and all but I dun use this site religiously, I use my name to download things for my friends because everyone agrees making people sign up for things is just plain annoying, even if it isn't inconvenient. I did it because I do love this site, but my money no matter how small the amount, has to go to stuff in the real world and I don't have to have a big over done computer look with a million things on my desktop at once monitoring things I dun even understand. I just like having the WB skin. Also the rude comment about the price from the first sales person was really unnecessary, you dunno everyone's situation off this site.

If you buy CursorXP (presuming you have Windows 2000 or XP) at $10, you then have a cool cursor changing application (etc), and acess to all the cool Widowblinds skins you want ~through the removal of the download cap, when you cross reference your purchase with your account here at the site.

Your $10 directly helps with the running costs of this site, and you get to feel good about giving something back to the site that so generously gives to you...

....and me!!

... I just like having the WB skin. Also the rude comment about the price from the first sales person was really unnecessary, you dunno everyone`s situation off this site.

1) As I am not a "sales person", you are the pot calling the kettle black insofar as our knowledge of each other goes, `K ?

2) The comment about the price was intentionally sarcastic but it was NOT rude ! You just had an unrealistic expectation about how careful I would be about your sensitivity. I consider the price very cheap IN COMPARISON TO OTHER SOFTWARE AND SERVICES !! Don''t flatter yourself to think I care one way or another whether or not you can afford it.

3) Now, as I see it, you''re just bemoaning the fact that you can no longer impress your friends by providing all this eye-candy to them "for free". I''m not even sure it''s legal for you to redistribute the 50 MB you already downloaded.

4) Yeah, EVERYBODY "just like having the WB skin". Some of us makes them and some of us chips in a little to defray the cost of sharing them around. So, yeah, it`s up to you which way you wunna doo it.

That being said, I`m outta here. Have fun creating all those skins for your friends while they sit back and do nothing to offset the costs.

"Decayed" indeed !

I don't think it's cool at all to be distributing the skins you get on the site to your friends...the artists here have paid for the software to make those skins that you want to toss around for free...and it's NOT cheap!! I'm not a skinner myself BECAUSE I can't yet afford the software to make them....but I'll save and I'll wait until I can...and not rip off the people here by stealing em....NOT COOL!!!
Look......I sure as heck I wish I had 20 bucks a day to spend on groceries!!! Geeze!!! That would be great!! Look if you want to do something...do it right...nobody with any self respect bites the hand that feeds them!

Save up a little change here and there when you can and within a short time you'll have enough to buy Windowblinds and Cursor XP...like I had to...it's worth it...and I can sleep at night too........because I'm the only one that uses what I pay for...and if your idea of being a friend is being a sneak and distributing copies of skins to other people...

forget it....I'm probably wasting my breath

With all the flames, its getting a wee bit hot in here.

1. If your downloading skins for your friends, then they must have windowblinds.

2. If your friends have windowblinds how come they can't download themselves?

As I see it you have windowblinds. You then copied the software and distributed it to your friends. Then you download skins because you have the account and they don't. Now you have reached your limit and you are complaining.

Please tell me and everyone else here that I have this wrong. Everything you have said so far has led me to this conclusion.

Maybe her friends do not have internet access? I for one, am a little annoyed at the flaming. You guys could of asked first then flamed later.

Understood. Regardless who flamed first, I said I''m off it and that''s it. Of course, if I just came out and spoke of my offense at being called a sales person, I''m sure there`d be sales people beatin` on me.

first sales person

I guess that would make me the second salesperson

Do I have to send in money just to download a windowblind's skin now?

You asked the question....we only tried to answer it for you. Just for the record DK, I don't work for WC or Stardock....I belong by choice to a community of fellow enthusiasts, artists and skinners. I support this community by subscribing to this site, by trying to help out others on the messageboards and by creating WB skins that others can download. Join the party, we have great fun here. Have a Nice Day

well the only reason i said anthing is beacause as a community we should help the newbies in a gentle manner. Otherwise we scare them off. We want more people to join up don't we? anyways...

My thoughts on this...

When I first came to this site [and joined] I downloaded like mad - 99% of it wallpapers as I didn''t even know what WindowBlinds, ObjectDock and others were. I too silently complained about having to pay for these things that I downloaded all the time. I, too, was highly offended at having to fork out cash to download unlimited wallpapers that I could get elsewhere for free [not the same ones, of course ].

It was only after meeting people like Jafo and other great admins/mods here and reading countless other threads started by "disgruntled" people like myself just how much it costs to keep a site of this magnitude afloat. It was only after dozens of threads and late-nite chats with Jafo that I realized just how EXPENSIVE a site like this costs to maintain, month to month, year by year. Just the bandwidth prices alone would sink me.

What I''m getting at here, is knowledge. More knowledge about this stuff decreases ignorance [if you have willing recipients to that information, of course..]. I was blindly ignorant in the beginning to the entire workings of a high-traffic site such as this nor was I very familiar with the concept of a "community", especially online. The more I returned month after month I realized just how "closely knit" these people are, how dedicated the great skinners are and how friendly everyone can be around here, if you''re polite when being inquisitive. Last winter I finally purchased a subscription to WinCustomize.com because the dedication alone inspires me to do so... I''m only a "wallpaper artist" and barely that, but I still get a sense of how closely knit this community is, from new users to the Administrators and other Mods/Wizops/Journeymen, etc.

I''m not as involved as I could be, but I hope that my purchase [more to come] will aid this community somewhat. I want it around for a long time.

What I *have* noticed, however, is the general intolerance for those who come to the message boards with "angst" in their words. People [sometimes] *do* seem to lash out rather quickly and rather defensively. I can understand WHY the lashing out happens, but I do think if we were just more tolerant and understanding of the "noob" frame of mind things would be a lot easier for all of us. We should be teachers and informers, not flamers and instant haters. If you recall my previous paragraphs I stated that I was JUST LIKE ''Decayed'' but the reality is I was just ignorant all it took to make me "see the light" was a few nice words [in his always eloquent nature] from Jafo on just what makes this site tick: the high costs: the wonderful people and the dedication to their art.

I''m thankful for every chat like this because it all served to inform me as well as alleviate my ignorance, blatant as it was.

Perhaps if all of these other people who are disgruntled were treated as I was, things would improve for everyone: new or not. As much as I understand the skinner''s frustrations with person after person coming to the boards to "whine", I don''t think lashing back, in any form helps things. Don''t think of them as "whiners" and "leeches" but rather people who just need a friendly, casual reminder of just what this site is, what it does and what it offers people: worldwide.

Thanks for reading.

Spyder....I agree with what you said. If you read the first four responses to DK's post....I think it shows that we were trying to answer DK's question and no one was getting their marshmallows toasted. It was only after DK's woe is me, but I have to download stuff for my friends and stuff about rude salespeople that DK put herself in that position. A little positive appreciation for the info she got would have taken this thread in a different direction

My only point was... even if people DO give us strife with their ignorant questions and "woe is me" attitudes, I still feel it's beneficial to keep a friendly nature... [as tough as that can be I know.. hehe... by all means I'm no saint here :P]

Thanks for commenting Essencay.

Slipped through underneath the radar.... [sometimes you miss some]

Decayed_Katze ....unfortunately, nothing much at all is really free in this world of ours....everything has its price.

What Wincustomize.com currently has in place is the facility for new visitors to the site to 'sample' a significant amount of the skinners' creations before being asked to help those skinners and their fellow fans/users to contribute in some way to support the high cost of display and dissemination of their works.

A high-profile site costs a high-profile amount of money to sustain, but it reaches and services far more people than the typical 'private' site could realistically achieve....and that benefits the artists/skinners directly.

$20 dollars for a subscription isn't all that difficult, not when it's to 'enhance' the $500 computer with the $x weekly/monthly net account, etc.   It's just part of the 'cost' of system customizing....[even ignoring the cost of the application software needed to actually alter the interface itself].

Any 'negative vibes' you may get in responses to your comments will be due to a feeling of 'pique' that others are being asked to support your enjoyment of the site when it is your enjoyment thereof that 'should' be prompting you to dig in and help, too...

Well, I came back after all, for good reason...

Yes, I heard you well Spydy. My take away is that having "class" requires constraint and deliberation and I think that`s worth striving for. That`s to everyone`s benefit.

Decayed_Katze: my apologies for being pissy about it.
