"DesktopX has encountered a problem"

I have downloaded DesktopX 2.1, but everytime I try to load a theme I get a message "Desktop X has encountered a problem, it will now close". whichever theme I use I get this and also on Desktop objects too. Any ideas please??? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Desktop X.

What is your OS, Ram and Processor speed? I'm thinking that you don't have enough free memory to run it. Maybe you should try shutting down all other unneccessary applications and try to see if it work. Or you can load a sysmetrix theme and see how much free memory you have available. If you give your OS, Ram, Processor speed, and free memory, at least we can rule those problems out. But, with the information given its hard to diagnose the problem.

I have an Intel 3.2ghz HT. with 1024 RAM.
I have shut down everything but explorer and systray from running in the background and have even downloaded a new theme, but it still does it, it half loads, then just when its nearly finished it stops and gives the error message. also the error message says " Error signature AppName: Desktop.exe AppVer.0.0.0.0. ModName:dxaxhost.dll ModVer 2.0.0. (although I have version 2.1) Offset:000223ca
Hope this helps,
Thank you,
Janice

To add to my last message, once I agree to close desktopX all my desktop icons disappear. Also, when I try to start desktopx from the startmenu, I get this message "DesktopX does not appear to have exited correctly. This could be the fault of a corrupt theme or a buggy plugin. Would you like to start with a new empty theme or load this theme again?"

Delete C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\DesktopX\'User'Theme folder (User=User's name) open DX and disable IconX and load the Theme/Object you want.

oh this happened to me when I first got desktop X

here is how you fix it:
1. when it asks you if you want to load a blank theme say yes
2. once dx has loaded right click on its systray icon and click the "switch to user mode" button (if your not already in user mode)
3. Now load a theme.... dont load the one that was messing you up... it might be corrupted or somthing.
4. Now that you have loaded a theme click "restart desktop X"
5. It should load correctly now, if it dosen't load correctly in the future (or whenever the "desktop X has encountered a problem" shows up, just cut the power, thats what I always did because if you dont then it will always crash every time you load a complex object (scripted object)
if the problem continues re-install desktop X and make sure to restart (not just shut down) once the installation is complete)
ALWAYS STAY IN USER MODE UNLESS MAKING A THEME

good luck

Thank you so much for your help, I followed it to the letter but no change I'm afraid.Any theme I try to load comes up with the "encountered a problem and has to close" error, then I can do nothing but shutdown DesktopX.
Is this because I am using the free downloaded version? The strange thing is, on the download page for DesktopX itself, it says "download DesktopX 2.1" but once its downloaded, I look at the properties of it and it says it is version 2.0.0.0. COuld this incompatibility have anything to do with it??

um don't do that.. that's like watson's advice to pull the power plug out of a running PC to force it to boot into ssafe mode if DX crashes your computer, it will prompt you before it loads again to say 'do you want to try running the theme again, or make a blank theme?' ..
