What is happening to the Winamp community

Anybody who's been following the GUI Olympics has by now noticed the extreme levels of anger and complaining by the Winamp skinners in the contest. They don't like the judge'd results. They don't like the choice of judges. They don't like the website. They don't like the forums. They don't like the event descriptions. They don't like the organizers. They don't like the judges not having to explain their decisions on each event.

It sure seems like whining to me. What is the deal? Is this what the Winamp community has become? In WinCustomize a high class restraunt that I've hung out in so long that I didn't realize the riff-raff that's been lurking outside beyond its parking lot?

Call me naive, but I don't belive that has anything to do with the Winamp 'community'. I think you may be assigning the actions of a very small group of individuals, who happen to be Winamp skinners, to everyone involved with Winamp skinning.

To me, that is the same as coming to WC and, after seeing the actions of Uzzee and his ilk, saying the whole WC community are just a bunch of troublemakers.

Thankfully, people like Jafo (who is a winamp skinner among other things, btw) and the other admins take care of that sort of Uzzee business here.

Well I think the skinners who sent skins in for the GUIOLYMPICS for Winamp represent the Winamp community whether they truly reflect the community as a whole or not. They reflect the view people will get of that community as a whole because of their childish and elitest behavoir.

I do agree though that it would be helpful to have at least a concise paragraph of why the judges ed a certain skin to win. I don''t doubt the results or that those who won didn''t deserve it. Just since it is a subjective kind of contest in a way, it would be nice to have some highlights of what was liked about the skin. What made it better than the rest.

People and/or communities will always be judged by the actions/voices of the vocal minority....unfortunately.

What is needed is rational thinking and an understanding that two or three quite noisy dissenters does not represent a 'community' of WA skinners wich probably numbers in the thousands...or tens of thousands.

WA skinning is amongst the 'oldest' groups of them all....it's essentially where [at least prior to XP] most public awareness of skins and skinning came from.

Skinning WinAMP goes back a long long way before the 'complexities' of WA3 and WA5....and it'd be interesting to see exactly where in this 'history' the noisy ones originated from.

pictoratus is right, of course...the same misrepresentation could be had here at Wincustomize....just by latching onto the wrong 'voices' which are not vocalizing the popular opinion.

As I commented on the GUIO forum....don't tar the whole WinAMP skinning community with the same brush....the vast majority of any skinning sub-set is 'good' [for want of a better word] which is why we enjoy the whole world of skins and skinning...
