Do people need permission or not?

I have noticed over quit some time, that people are using other people's icons for thier shellstyle images. (My pictures, My music, My movies, etc...)
No one gives them credit or gets permission to use these images. No one has said anything about it, because it seems to be common place. This has been prevolent in almost all port and many windowblinds.

I feel that everyone (should) be getting permission.
I'll give you an example.
If I created a windowblind and used the (PirateOS) icons for the shellstyle images, It would be taken down faster than you could click the download button.
But using other peoples images seems to be ok.

I think it would be a given that permission would be needed.

of course.. permissions should be included. however right now i couldn't tell you what shell images were on my home computers though this computer is all pixos themed. i wouldn't take it the wrong way, its nothing against you - i don't think its something that is easily noticed by the admins. if an author minds, the thing to do is email the artist and say 'hey, i noticed you used my images.. please give me credit' or tell someone 'i know that guy and i don't think he'd aprpeciate you using your images, you should talk to him'. admins have a busy time, again don't take it personally

Permission is required to use someone's icons as shell pics, just like anything else. Feel free to email me (or any mod) any you found that don't include permission. The only exception I can think of is icons that are released under GPL.

It's entirely possible for an otherwise completely original skin to slip by with ripped shell images. I might easily overlook something like that if there are no other clues to make me suspicious.

You should ask before using anothers work, be it images or scripts. Its the right thing to do.

No problem DesignCaddy, but I think you missed the point a little bit. I'm not talking about the icons themselves, but the images taken from the icons. These images are between 200 pixels to 400 pixels. They aren't hard to miss at all.

Thanks for the insight Mike. It helps alot.
I forgot about the GPL.

i do understand that, z71. but when i come into a folder to do something, i don't always notice the graphic in the background. i'm only scanning icons and text labels

OK, DC. I gotcha now.

Z71....200 x 400 pixels CAN be easy to 'miss'....particularly when 1600 x 1200 pixels can inadvertently 'slip through' without notice.

Not every icon image is going to be instantly recognizable as not belonging to the uploader.

However, the process in place is that the community at large becomes the safety net....more eyes on the ball to determine whether something needs attention.

Then it's just a case of forwarding the 'problem' with suitable links, etc to an admin and it's sorted.

Re the GPL release of icons and their 'legality' it'd still be necessary to indicate they were in fact GPL icons....

If a skin has shellstyles, then you switch to another skin (that doesnt have them), do the shellstyles change to default?
