The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Another great story installment from Ray, although I'm not sure I follow it completely. I must have missed something somewhere. Anyway, It's good to be included in the story. My story telling skills need honing, so I will refrain from posting more RPG storyline for the moment. I'll be content to be included as Ray sees fit. ;)

BTW, what is the KitWarrior thing about anyway?
Did I miss something else?

No worries, Miles. I try to link as much as possible with events that have happened in our universe and you would need to have read the other stories in our thread and on the forum to follow completely.

Don't stop posting stories, Miles. You could always start your own sub-plots as you see fit. This is supposed to be for fun, not a story writing competition. :)

KitWarrior had a close encounter with CariElf in our story. This has induced serious jealousy from the President and the Vice-President from the CariElf Fanclub.

And The Unofficial Strategy Guide (Orion Sector) has been posted on the main Galciv noticeboard and included in the Downloads page. Congrats, Gibbie and Ralegh! :CONGRAT:

"No worries", mate.
You always say just what I need to hear Ray. You have the empathy of a good-aligned deity.

Maybe I'll work on a Fellowship battle song.

Ray, are you English? Tolkien was a Brit as far as I can remember.

Seems like there are a couple of us here who read fantasy books. I've did most of the reading in my youth. My favourites were the DragonLance series and the Riftwar Trilogy by Richard E. Feist.

Anyone else wants to share their favourite fantasy series? I may want to pick up some recommended by you.

"You always say just what I need to hear Ray. You have the empathy of a good-aligned deity."

Heheh. Other than fantasy, I'm also into self-improvement. Empathy is one of the pillars of Daniel Goleman's Emotional Quotient methodology.

Battle songs are great!! Go for it. Think about what you would be singing when the Fellowship encounters the Death Knights.

Nar. Singapore was an British colony and English is our first language but I'm Chinese.

Yes, I think Tolkien's a Brit. I've read the preface to his book where he disputed readers' claims that his experience in Britain during the World Wars have inspired the stories in LOTR.

Well, as a teenager I loved the Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster, but it seems it's out of print now. Also the Thieves World series which I only partly read. The Sword of Shanara, and Elfstones of Shanara were great reads as well.
My favorite fantasy book though has to be The Hobbit.

Hey, I hope no one minds me rewriting Middle Earth history. :)

except for maybe Tolkien, but hey we are in the Metaverse and everything is different.

“Are you feeling alright, CariElf?” Michael spoke with concern as CariElf swayed slightly.

As Michael reached for her, he had a peculiar feeling of been stared at. He glanced around the room but strangely could not detect the source of his discomfort.

A groan from IceMole shook him from his musings.

“CariElf, this one seems to have taken physical wounds which I’ve treated as best as I could. He also appears to be poisoned.”

“I’m immune to poisons. Let me take it from him.”

CariElf sat beside IceMole and drew her face near to his. Her long silken hair draped over the pirate scholar’s head. Parting her lips, she spoke a single word of Command.

IceMole’s body froze in magical stasis. His eyes were locked in a state of surprise as he felt a magical force moving within him. A thick busy cloud of dark flecks flowed from his mouth into that of CariElf’s. As the last of the flecks left him, he slumped onto the bed, free from the poison that plagued him.

“I need to rest, Michael. Join the others. I will be with you shortly to fight the Undead.”

Michael nodded and left quickly. He had the words of his glorious battle songs on his lips.

“Miles would be shocked to hear my latest melodies. To think he thought himself the better bard.” Michael smiled as he imagined the look on the face of his rival in song.

Ray the European: it has a nice ring to it doesn't it!

And here I was thinking that Tolkien was American, or possibly Canadian which is roughly the same thing.

The crime of the century is that Fritz Leiber's work is rarely published these days. Although I have seen some recent reprints of his Lankhmar series. That is obligatory reading for any fantasy buff. Leiber was an absolute poet, and his series about the pair of mates, Fafhrd and Grey Mouser is sublime.

Another excellent series is George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. He is American. His evil characters are inspirational. And he even has a Miles type character in there.

I have previously recommended Aussie authors to you Ray, and I expect you have already read those!

I'm not read them yet, Beary. (Boy, where did you get such a cute name?)

I believe the bookstores in Singapore usually carry the more popular American authors. I will also look for the Lankhmar series and 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.

Good job with the first Fellowship post in the War of the Worlds, Gengsta. That brought us into the picture.

Great to see five empires - GROSS, Jedi Republic, Freedom Force, MWC and the Fellowship getting involved in the War of the Worlds.

Yeah that was long. Took me a while to make everything right. I'll try to write everything else, but if anyone is interested feel free to take part.

Everyone seems interested in meeting us first, and thrust task after task of writing our way.

Oh, and for The Hobbit lovers out there, I have to brag that in a previous story I sold Bilbo to a relative of the trolls that he helped murder. :p

With the battle of the undead imminent, Miles the battle-song singing bard/monk humbly broke into a song to rally the troops:

Cry for Death

Cry for Death
Try for the final test
Soon it will be upon us
And cry we will
For the enticing bloodlust
of each and every kill

They come for us all
In our sacred hall
Fleet of the Death Knight
Keen for a bloody fight

Slag them all, so goes the cry
From the emperor of Middle-Earth
Fight fire with fire and they will fry
Death Knights of our own, no dearth

Cry for Death
Try for the final test
Soon it will be upon us
And cry we will
For the enticing bloodlust
of each and every kill

Still they come in a massive onslaught
The battle will be won though hard fought
Other legions come into play
With their battle-tried tactics
Deciding the outcome of the fray
Never again an innocent galactic
Peace in the end shall prevail
Though rivers of blood run for the frail

A world will be united
As the fear the Death Knight spreads
The world darkened or lighted
Battle for Good or Evil, in deep water treads

Cry for Death
Try for the final test
Soon it will be upon us
And cry we will
For the enticing bloodlust
of each and every kill

The Spymaster stops taking notes in some secret corner of Fellowship Hall, suddenly appearing out of nowhere:

Wow, some good stories developing in a few threads! I am still working away. Got bogged down by a few things, but there will be more War of the Worlds installments from me.
Oh yeah, I'm going to adopt your Fellowship MMORPG character for the WotM for the installments I write. If you wish otherwise, please say something. I'm drafting something tomorrow.
I think I'll leave future songs to the more experienced bard I have heard about, Michael. We haven't formally met, but Michael would you like to post some better verses? I would be interested in hearing them if you would be kind enough to post something. Not for competition, but just to see what sort of bard you are. :)

By the way, bards do much more than just sing songs, so if you're not up to it I understand. Bards are supposed to be a jack-of all-trades, in any event. That's why I chose it. Maybe my RPG character needs to be more general, say just Monastic Warrior Bard :)

Poisoned Pirate Subplot: The Cure

A Spy Among Us?

A swordsman from Rohan escorted several peasants into the Fellowship's infirmary. They were not fighters and had instead volunteered to help the wounded. Already two men dressed in pirate garb were being tended to by a bard and a cleric.

"Shall I end his life now before he enters into a state of eternal wretchedness?" the bard inquired, placing his hand on a dagger. One of the volunteers stepped forward quickly.

"No! It is not the time. There is another way..." responded the cleric.

Battle cries from outside the infirmary could be heard. The swordsman's companion, a mad prophet, signaled for the volunteers to come forward with stretchers. The crash of metal weaponry striking against its adversary filled the night air. Unnatural noises accompanied by bright flashes signaled the use of magic. As the swarm of zombies crept ever closer to the Fellowship Halls, a spectacular pillar of white light pierced the night sky.

A peasant woman grabbed her friend's shoulder and began to say, "I looks just like..."

"Heaven! My Heaven!" The other peasant yelled after raising her head.

All were squinting their eyes when one of the men uttered "Arrrgh."

After returning their gaze to the battlefield, they could see the undead retreating! Cheers went up from all ends of the Hall.

Many Evenings Later

"All our rooms are quiet and clean," the innkeeper boasted. "If it's rest you be needin', we have the bed you be needin'." His plump face chuckled.

"What is your usual clientele?" the slender stranger asked.

"All good folk," responded the fat man. "Some wealthy, some not so wealthy, but all good."

It was easy for the skinny one to see through the innkeeper's smile, but his lies were inconsequential.

Stepping past the two men, a wizard dressed in white patted the plump one on his shoulder. He looked at the stranger and paused.

"You were one of the volunteers for the infirmary, weren't you?" the wizard asked.

"Yes, sir."

"Good show!" The wizard turned to the innkeeper. "Give this man one of your best." He winked and left the two men.

As they continued down the hallway, the slender man asked another question. "Have you had many guests recently?"

"Oh..." The plump features of his face twisted as he tried to recall. "Been quite busy 'round here... except for Friday."

"I'm in love!" a nubile maid exclaimed as she exited a room in front of the two men.

"And who be the unfortunate man?" the innkeeper asked.

She hadn't noticed the presence of others in the hallway. "Oh! No one father."

"Keep yer mind clear of the man in that room!" he ordered with his large face turning red. "I curse meself for letting a pirate in me place. Had that wizard not insisted, I'd kick his lazy behind out the window!"

The nubile lass lowered her head submissively and left. Along her brisk walk down the hallway, she passed a small furry creature. Without an eye to take notice, the cuddly one slipped into the wizard's room.

Meanwhile, the innkeeper and the stranger entered a small empty room. After a short exchange of information, the slender man was left alone. He sat on the lumpy bed and reflected on the battles that he had witnessed several days before.

In the Eye of the Storm

The peasants had been told to wait in the infirmary. Many were excited that a wizard was on his way to thank them personally. A slender man among them drifted away from the crowd and glanced out a narrow window. It overlooked a courtyard that was busy with activity.

"Seize them!" a druid yelled.

Near the entrance to the courtyard, a ranger and an illusionist were slowly morphing into new forms.

Hearing the commotion, more peasants crowded the windows of the infirmary.

A small green creature approached the two doppelgangers. He prodded them with a walking stick as he repeated powerful words. "Speak now. Speak truth you do. Speak now. Speak truth you do."

The cleric entered the infirmary and coughed to get the attention of the volunteers. She began to speak only after they had all turned to give her their attention.

"We have news that the undead are preparing for another assault. All of the wizards are busy refortifying our defense. The Fellowship of the Ring asks for your services again."

"We stand by the Fellowship until disintegration!" a man proudly declared. All heads nodded in agreement.

"A question," said a skinny man in the back.

"Please," the cleric responded.

"What will we face next?"

"More of the same except that the zombies will be led by Death Knights."

Murmurs spread among the peasants as they were unfamiliar with this threat.

"Do not worry," the cleric assured them. "We have warriors who are familiar with the Death Knights. New tactics will not grant victory to the undead."

The Return of Sunlight

Without a sound, a slender figure slipped into the pirate's room. It sat on an old wooden chair adjacent to the bed where the ill man rested. After the bedridden pirate stirred, the silent figure began to speak.

"I have important information for you, my friend. Information that may save your life. Are you listening?"

There was an open window behind and to the right of the seated man. This window provided a clear view of the changing sky. Shades of dark purple were being pushed away by pinks and oranges. Stray kittens meowed from across the street. The intruder looked over his shoulder. A young girl was playing with the poor creatures.

"Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me," the girl sang as she picked up two of the kittens.

When the man looked at his friend, he noticed the pirate had also turned his head towards the window. His faded eyes were now open.

"Good, " the man continued. "It seems you have a poison in your body. One that will turn you into a wraith if you do not accept its antidote. I do not know what the antidote is, but a shield spell is giving you time to discover it. Do you know what it is?"

The sun came over the horizon and cast a brilliant light on the face of the sick man. He did not squint or reply. He remained motionless for several minutes watching the sunrise. Just as the seated man was about to speak again, the pirate reached out towards to window with his right arm. His hand grasped an invisible object in the air.

"I accept," the pirate said in a weak voice.

The other man looked out the window again and shook his head. He thought he saw the cleric drifting amongst the beams of light, but her image vanished in an instant.

"These days have been far too great a strain on my mind," he muttered to himself.

"That's unfortunate, my friend. I feel well rested and... invigorated!"

Gerakken looked back to KitWarrior and was stunned. Sitting upright with no sign of ill health, Kit smiled and reached out to Gerakken with the same hand as before. He accepted Kit's hand with a firm handshake and they laughed together.

"Let's go! I have a lot of raiding to catch up on!" Kit insisted as he stepped out onto the window's ledge.

"What about paying for our rooms?" Gerakken inquired.

They laughed again.

"Oh, but one thing before we go," Kit said as he reached back into the room. There was a bowl of strawberries on a table next to the bed. He grabbed a handful and stuffed his mouth.

Returning to the window ledge, both Kit and Gerakken waved their arms in invitation to go first. Together, they leaped to the ground.

About the Author

KitWarrior was born in the dark recesses of a cargo freighter, which was subsequently raided by pirates. Although his parents did not survive, Kit was sold to a family who raised him as their son. He studied political science at Meta State University, but visions of a pirate's life never left his dreams. Before earning his degree, Kit quit college to explore the Metaverse in an old corvette. Eventually he joined G.R.O.S.S. and became a full-fledged marauder. His career is well documented by his short stories and in his paintings. Kit's current whereabouts are unknown, but most suspect he became one of many unnamed worshipers at the Temple of CariElf.

I've found the article - a bit earlier than I thought - 1985, in issue 27
- and scnned it. Available as a pdf at http://www.alex-robertson.co.uk/rhyme.pdf

Note a) it's about 360k and b) it was written in the relatively early days of RPGs

Barry stumbles into the infirmary. He had been missing for a full three days, and was just now able to stagger to help.

The Undead had wounded him. Their vile poisons flooded his body and caused Strep Throat to violate his very being.

The physicians immediately began treating Barry with potions and spells...the most potent of the potions being the mystical "capsule of Penicillin".

Barry began to improve, and slowly returned to health.

Sorry for being gone for so long, folks! I seemed to have missed a lot! Welcome to our newest Fellowship members!

In regards to my scores...I wasn't thinking when I posted that remark. I was in the early stages of a high fever, and didn't really know what was going on.

While I was sick, I took the time to play a little, and got beaten to a pulp. I think I went a little crazy on the difficulty! :notsure:

So I dropped back a bit...hopefully will submit a score within the next couple of days, but it is a Simple game. :p

Anyway, it's good to be back! :CONGRAT:

The two ships struggled in a desperate tug a war when the happy ship Frodo droped out of ringspace to launch a barrage of elevn biscout mines and then quickly slipped back into ringspace and began to outpace the struggling arch rivals.

The white ring wraiths have pulled ahead, said Senator Idle. Pontius turn off your disruptive sonic weapon and let us both pursue our second favorite rival.

Many Congradulations. It is getting fun with all the competition. What ever happen to the Euro Juagernat? Anyway keep up the fun work, but remember there is only one true master of the ring....and he does not share.

Ray,

Would you (and any other FOTR members) be interested in a very general homepage for the Fellowship? Something really simple, so it doesn't need to be updated very much that will just give the peeps some eye candy to join?

Something like this? http://home.earthlink.net/~nascarfanatic/

I don't know why, but I think it's nice for the empires to have an alternate site that ties things together. If it isn't cool for anybody, please let me know and I'll take it down.

Okay, submitted that little Simple game. I'm going to try to up the difficulty again.

Man, there is a serious difference in Simple and Normal! ;)

Barry,

Yeah, I was looking for someone to help with our webiste. A simple one would do. I forgot you were good with these kind of things. Let's use what you have already done. I will suggest some more content. Once it's ready, I'll link our empire page to it.

Good job with the win. Once you chalk up more experience with the game, normal aliens would not be a match for you. :)
