The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Actually, I'm going to go get a cup of coffee and look at the women in the other office.

Back in a few minutes... ;)

I upset my Boss in my last review by booking 10% of my time being on the phone talking to management explaining how dumb they are.

he made me change it to SME consulting.

That's great bakka! LOL

Only 10%, though? I usually spend about 30-35% talking to my coworkers about management's failings...
I salute you Bakka. Did you get a D for your appraisal?
LOL

Now that I've joined the fellowship, and to avoid bakka's problem, I'll start thinking about some justifications in advance, just to avoid being taken unprepared ;p .

Something like "there is a huge galactic crisis that can lead to war, I'm trying to solve it by talking to some acquaintances who are very weel versed in these matters. You MUST admit that it is more important than what you are asking me to do! just wait your turn!"

Ahhh, Nastavnik. Welcome to the Fellowship!

And I want to personally thank you. I stayed up way too late last night powering out my latest game- the one I hoped would take us over 900K.

I was quite crestfallen when I discovered we were still 27.8 points shy! Couldn't fall asleep immediately after that, I was pretty grumpy I tell ya. ;)

But here it is the next day and I see that I got the assist. I set the table and you finished the kill. Thanks!

Thanks to you (& the others) for this warm welcome!

Well, I'm glad I could help with this symbolic milestone (scorestone?). It's me who should extend my thanks to you, I've spent many hours reading your posts in the mod forum (and everywhere else) and I'm still amazed by all the time and energy you gave to this community. So Thank You.

By the way Hawaii I'm trying to earn this "very good" little icon as well, but I think it's making my games a bit more complicated...

Well, I must say, from what I've seen & read before, that I feel in very good company here.

I fell from the good path on my last game...I'll probably go back for my next game. I was just interested in seeing how the game played on evil...

Arrrrgh
time to go home, but with a lot of work to do there :sniff!:
(it was not a very efficient day today... but a worthwhile talk :p )

Talk to you guys later.

A lot of action on this thread. I think Threadzilla has competition now! Good job on building a strong Fellowship, folks. Nothing like a strong, solid empire to give us pirates in GROSS something to fight.

I'm flattered. There's so little going on in the Mods forum any more. Modding never really took off for this game, I've got my theories but it's a moot point now. I'm glad some people are still getting use out of the Writer, it was a labor of love.

Don't feel obligated in the least. Play the way you want to, I've been considering going Evil in one of my games, just to check it out. Oh, and there's some Evil only modding questions I've had for the longest time that I want to have answered.

What attracted me to the Fellowship was not the Roleplaying (though it's great to read the stories), not to be part of a Goody-Goody Empire (as it's not really a requirement anyways), but service to the community- the original reason the White Council, now the Fellowship, was founded.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what little alignment icon you have next to your name, but whether or not you were a positive force for the community. I like to think I am.

Do good through your actions and posts, not by playing the game. That's my advice to the members of the Fellowship.

OK, time to get off my soapbox. I'm *so* behind on my work thanks to cranking out 4 games in 4 days. Gotta go... :)

Wait! Not quite gone yet, I wanted to answer this post by Ray.

What is the Number 1 change that you would like to see in Galciv? Limit yourselves to one suggestion.

I feel obligated to speak up from a modder's point of view. There are many things I could suggest, but what I would really love to have is a fully built out Events engine, with:

1) Triggers
2) Conditions
3) Chains

fully exposed in data files to the modders. Believe you me, I would whip up an interface that would make doing this stuff easy for all.

Think the EU2 events engine in space. That would be fantastic!

I second that.

But I also second Ray's suggestion for starbase governors. Even in smaller games, there is a lot of constructors going around!

With great power comes great responsibility. I like to think I help out in any way I can...

Especially on smaller maps. Production bonuses and Trade bonuses are so essential on the smaller maps. Every extra bit of income and production matters a great deal.

I think your average alignment needs to be above 85 or so. You'll need a few 100's to pull it up there.

Yes, I've been trying to do that, but I have the feeling that there are not enough events in my games to allow me to reach such moral heights ;)

I noticed that either everything goes fine, and the game ends too soon for that , or I get crushed like a bug right away (or just a regular crushed, a little later on); anyway, not enough events (for the moment).

Just build a few extra colony ships put 1 mil pop on them and colonize planets to up your alignment. I've noticed negative modifiers usually do not stack. Since 13 and 14 colonies are viable if you can put soil enhancers and habitant improvements on them quickly.

Yes I'll try that. I've been reading a thread in the strategic forum about colonizing below 15 worlds, where they suggested doing that. But if I go to far below 15, it's my people who will start calling me Nasty. ;p
