The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

It was alright here. The missing file is one of the VC++ runtimes iirc. It may be elsewhere on your system!

Incidentally missing file (if a problem) is MSVCRTD.DLL

It's a library from MS Visual C++ - I think to do with debugging.

I've put a copy on my website http://www.alex-robertson.co.uk/msvcrtd.dll

Note about 385k. Download into your galciv directory and it should fix the problem

USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I see, thanks for posting that.

I have to finish my current game before upgrading, anyways, so Stardock is likely to have posted a fix by then.

Thanks for posting the link in case I need it. :)

Has anyone gone to #stardock chat to tell them about it?

I have to go to work now but maybe one of you can pop by and tell them just in case they have not seen the messages on the forum.

Thank you, Chris. I'm touched.

And congrats to all you GROSSers who have worked hard for the 1M score. Good job!

I was thinking about the fact that the Drengin.net subscribers will get an advantage to scoring as compared to those who are not subscribers due to the new scoring tweak.

My proposal would be for Stardock to synchronise v1.05 and v1.09/v2.0 scores so that everyone is on a level playing field.

The Fellowship Halls is a safe haven for all.

Welcome to the Fellowship, Cotal. :D
Delighted to have you join us!

You're the second lady to grace our Halls.
The first being of course our CariElf the cleric.

I see you, Cotal....what's going on now? Who's nasty, and what are you up to?

Ray - congrats on 100k; thanks for the cheers on 1 mill.

To the mighty wizards, fearsome warriors, poetic bards, and all of the little people in the Fellowship (sorry H5O):

Congrats on being the first Empire to 1.01 million and retaking the lead.

So, who's starting the betting pool on the 2 mil mark?

Hail Obi Wan, Jedi Master of the Force.

The Fellowship returns the salute to a most valued ally.

No more betting for me. I've lost two bags of gold already playing in Rabid Rob's gambling den. LOL

(Obi-Wan quickly glances over both shoulders to see if somebody's behind him) Umm...thanks! (wonders if Kit taped a "Kick Me" sign to his back again)

Cotal, what's with the change? By the way, those wizard robes look good on ya. Gotta love a girl in formalwear.

Don't worry, we Halflings are used to the foibles of the Tall Ones. For some silly reason you Humans attach importance to the strangest qualities of your fellow sentients. What matters one's height when compared to one's deeds? ;)

Well said, H50. :D

If based on deeds, you are ten feet tall.

(Obi-Wan glances around.) Master Yoda? Is that you? (Fails to see H5O as he's looking over his head)

(Obi-Wan considers why his mental processes continue to magically appear for all to see. And why he is speaking of himself in the third person. Perhaps the Calvin and Hobbes influence is strong with the Metaverse itself and not only with G.R.O.S.S.)

Sorry, H5O. I should know by now that it's never wise to poke a Hobbit who's holding a lit pipe.

Obi Wan Now I'm really blushing!

I posted a heartfelt reason for leaving the ANZACs in one of thier two threads (can't remember which one). I've always admired the folks in both the Fellowship and your Jedi Republic and I figured joining either would be a good decision. When I read that GROSS was numero uno . . . well I had to do something about it! LOL

Right off the bat I need to ask a question (or two . . . mabye more) regarding Antimatter Technology . . .

a. What's the absolute quickest path to making Atimatter misslies (AM) disregarding all else?
b. How come I can built AM in systems without a AM powerstation? Is this an oversight or does it depend solely on my current tech completed?
c. Is there anyway to increase AM yields? (can't imagine why they already 'kick buttinski' but I'm just curious)

I ask all this because I'm trying to create a super-low cost stratergy. I hate maintanence costs and build losta sensors to stave off invasion (using them as fodder to block transports). . . and thought AMs are dirt cheap and great value for money!

Also it would appear that leaving the Galactic Council in ver 1.05 sanctions all trade even to minors! Please tell me this isn't the case in 1.09 . . . I happened across this when I couldn't move a Terror Star at a critical time because of GC resolutions. doh!

Please induldge me, thanks.

Hey guys,

No nominations from any of you for the Altarian Star Awards?

I'm sure you enjoyed stories written by some of our very talented writers on the board.

Congrats Fellowship on also reaching 1,000,000.

:CONGRAT: :CONGRAT: :CONGRAT:

It shows the true grit and determination of Galcivvers.

Now I suggest that the Fellowship and G.R.O.S.S. (which is really about plundering nasty aliens and not our much loved human brethren and woman) (note: the dictionary says that 'brethren' means brothers so Cotal can't be a brethren- maybe a brethhen?) amalgamate and become the G.R.O.S.S. Fellowship, and we can all live happily ever after. :D

Cotal,

a. Use this nifty utility, http://www.panath.com:8080/
Click AMM under Ships and Generate Graph.

b. Good point. Anti-Matter is a pre-req but Zero-grav Manufacturing isn't. Currently, it depends solely on possessing Dreadnought tech.

c. Exact same way to improve attack/defense for ships. Military resources, military tech, planetary shipyard improvements and military racial picks. Remember for shipyard improvements, it improves all ships produced from the planet, even those produced before the shipyard is built.

AMMs are an excellent and cheap deterance. In fact they were so good SD had to nerf their impact to military rating in one of the previous update.

Yes, leaving the United Planets stops all trade. It's tough but they had to balance the advantage of avoiding all UP penalties.

Whew, you sure can fire off those questions, can't you?
:D
