The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Yeah, I know he will pass me very soon just as he passed Pontius and Staffa.

I wouldn't be able to keep up with him unless the new scoring system really is very significantly enhanced for the higher levels.

I'm playing a Maso Gigantic now to test out the new beta scoring system. I expect to win but can't tell if I can finish it soon.

Something about this statement just seems wrong...playing a Maso Gigantic just to test a scoring system. :SURPRISED:

By the way, happy Monday everybody. Hope your day starts better than mine. :notsure:

Barry, would you mind putting in some form of paragraphing for my backstory on the website?

Did I miss something, or do we have another member of the Fellowship? Bradley@Maple, welcome to our little corner of the woods! It's been quite a strange weekend for me, so if I'm a little behind on the news, sorry.

If you'd like to submit a backstory for role playing (or if you just feel like writing down something just for fun), feel free to post it and I'll add it to the website. http://home.earthlink.net/~nascarfanatic/

:)

BTW, updated the Fellowship News (small article)

What's wrong with it? :)

As far as I know, I'm the only Beta tester who plays Maso.

I'm 75% done with my game. Crushed 3 AIs militarily and got the last two fighting. Should be able to win and submit latest by tomorrow.

Ray, you amaze me. I've started my first crippling (I think it is that) and after 2 days, I'm still in the beginning. I guess, to quote someone I read in this forum, I must be a complete control freak :)

Bradley just joined us a short while ago, Theoden.

He's the reason why we are 60k ahead of GROSS rather than about equal.

Nastavnik, my gigantic games take between 6-8hrs of game play. I've cut down on a lot of constructor micromanagement to save time.

Thanks Cotal, but my personal best was achieved three months back. See below.

I also noticed that RayChua, 2nd in leader board has a 36126!

Unfortunately, Frogboy zapped my score because he didn't believe anyone could have gotten that score without cheating. Obviously I didn't cheat.

Miles Naismith aka Zyrixion's back story:

Born in the Nothern Kingdom of Arthedain, a river-trading city of Caras Celairnen, Zyrixion's Mother and father worked hard to raise him right. Zyrixion's father worked as a trade-good buyer/seller and earned enough to provide his son with good books and a good mentor, a bard named Tridar. Zyrixion's mother also worked, in the city market place where villagers from all over Arthedain would come to buy their wants and needs. Tridar taught Zyrixion well in the ways of the bard, and after his mentoring was over, Zyrixion decided to follow his own path of learning, studying monk/mentalism skills at a local monastery. Zyrixion quickly realized that he had too many interests and not enough time to pursue them, so he opted to be more of a bard than a monk. One day, he decided he wanted to be an adventurer, and went on a quite a few adventures, allying with this adventure party or that, defeating rogues and marauders who threatened trade in the kingdom. Zyrixion meet many rangers in Arthedain, and he picked up an odd skill here and there from them. One day Zyrixion's travels took him all the way to the kingdom of northern Gondor. There, in a city near Isengard, he met a wizard, Ray The Wanderer, who accosted him. Zyrixion was playing a local game in the tavern, and Ray asked if he was intereseted in adventuring. Zyrixion agreed to join with Ray's Fellowship of the Ring party, and though uncertain of the others at first, he quickly realized he had found the long-term adventuring group which he was looking for. :)

I hope that's enough info for you all. I have been busy lately and haven't posted any RPG, but maybe I will post again in the near future. :D

Edit:

I was going to suggest a change to my background story, but I think I will let it be as it is. :)

Ray,

How do you do that? It takes me a couple of days to play any size game. Do you or does anyone have have some efficiency tips?

Thanks.

One thing I do is to fleet my constructors, then hit build starbase, and all the upgrades are automatically prompted to you, i.e. all contructors in the fleet build one star base at once. ;)

That's the only tip I know of, but I would like to hear someone else's approach if they have one. :)
Thats a good tip Miles! I haven't tried that in 1.05 because (in past versions stacked constructors would only build one structure!) But if thats been fixed that'd be awsome! I gota check it out!

It takes me about 3 to 4 hours to tech through to Beyond Human on a Large Map (year 2210ish or there abouts) on Normal difficulty and build absolutely everything. (War party, +++ social prod +++ millitary prod as the ability bonus settings).

Having a station mining (or even mining nothing) in each of your systems with all mining slots full increased social and millitary production in the vicinity ALOT speedwise.

Some of the buildings and techs themselves (esp certain wonders etc) will increase your production speed and research astronomicaly. (i.e. I built a Galactice Monument in 3 turns! Thats really maxing out the speed!)

Also Auto-attack on Medium maps when your technologically superior is a neat 'set and forget' aspect which lets you get on with it.

EBZ I suspect would have all the angles on ultra-speed. If my math is correct anyways . . LOL

Incidently . . . I'm conducting an experiment!

Basically, I have stopped building a ProdMax starbase in every sector I own. Now I build just one in my wonder/TG building sector.

It's tedious on a big map where I have to constantly click on the SBs to see if they need more constructors. It would be great if I could instead see the SB bonuses on the main map.

I've also stopped upgrading resource SBs once I know the game is won. I don't build cultural SBs anymore. In my last Maso Gigantic, I've built only one to flip a sector in the corner.

So basically, 95% of the modules I build now are mining ones.

And what kind of experiment would that be, Cotal? :)
. . . well I'm trying (as best I can to play through on a very similar setting/scenario) for each of the difficulty levels! I know its been done befor but I'm finding it interesting noting the subtle changed in difficulty at each level.

My first observation is that calkwalk and beginner offer 'much of a muchness' scorewise for completing the same tasks etc, eventhough in the later the AI actually 'moves' and 'occasionally' does something!

The only problem with my experiment is that I still can't get to the mid-game on maso, my economic style just can't cope with the AI self gratification bonuses . . .
Someone used to say that a monkey making random keystokes can win Galciv at Calkwalk. :D

Yeah, 10k points is too high a reward to beat up comatose aliens. I suspect that most of the points come from teching rather than pop.

If you are challenging Maso, Cotal, do remember to check out the Maso Strats thread over at the Strat forum.
Ray I will do! I can't believe how agressive the maso AI is . . . it's certainly a quantum leap difficulty wise.

Semi related I guess. The minors (especially the ones that appear later in the game and have all the techs I do) colinized nearly 2/3 of the planets on beginner while I wasn't paying attention . . . oppps.

Even less related . . . I got so fed up trying to survive on maso I played that 10k calkwalk game as a form of 'therapy' . . . I was quite shocked at the score too :SURPRISED:

Incidently, some of the 'grovelish chat' that the other races say in the diplomacy screen on calkwalk is quite funny . . . There's one (by the Yor) which was like a 150 word essay on why I'm so great and fantastic! I nearly fell off my chair in fits of laughter!

I keep almost starting a game, and then stopping. I fear I might be pushing the envelope of GalCiv burn-out. :notsure:

Big maps take too long. I like the small maps but dislike that I've got to step off the gas and 'tech-up' in order to score well.

I might try Maso but it sounds like more of a chore than a game. Maybe I'll play something else for awhile...

Take a break, H50. 5 games in a week is a lot.

Or try playing with cheats just for the fun of it. The advanced start option could save you a lot of time.
Try a maso game! Tiny/rare is a good way to get started--if you control-N until you get two planets in your home sector it's not that hard (though by no means easy). I find maso is a lot of fun--it's definitely my favorite difficulty (my recent string of Crippling games notwithstanding).

If nothing else, it will make you a much better player at lower difficulty levels.

Wow, I just checked EBZ's Metaverse score. He played 14 games on Saturday and Sunday! I would definitely like to hear speed advice from him.

And my moment in the top 5 is over :(
