The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Maybe you should make a quick post when you add a new piece. That way we would all know when to go and read the Metaverse Review.

G-Force

PS: I'm really hoping that there currently isn't such a post or I would've made a big fool out of myself.

Just checked, there isn't :D

There's a sticky called The Metaverse Review is Launched! :)

But I usually try to spread the news in the empire threads as well.

Woohoo! The Balrog just gets bigger and bigger!

Thanks for the kudos, Rick! I'm glad everybody still enjoys reading it. I think the MR is really helpful to players who don't visit the forums everyday. It helps to recap what's going on in the Metaverse.

Matthew just landed a Maso Gig bomb. Glad to see your anomalous problem seem to have faded away. :)

Wonder what happened to our hobbit alchemist, HawaiiFive-O. He hasn't posted in ages.

Special note to Matthew Downie: I only counted four players who have ever had 50k + games (scanning the top 50 average scores). Matthew, you are finally getting the points you deserve. :D

Submitted my game. Seems that my score is always just over 50k for a Maso Huge.
Well, 2 more 50ks to 300k pp score. :)

Hello again! Thanks, everybody.
I won my 52k maso gigantic game fairly easily. I set Tight Clusters, and got a good central location. By building a starbase in the right place, I gained access to a huge completely unoccupied cluster of stars in one corner of the galaxy, and got them all, making me the biggest power in the galaxy. The Drengin and Yor got wiped out early by the Fundamentalist event early on, which was good as the Fundamentalists were willing to pay for my techs. The only significant contenders were the Arceans and Altarians, and once I'd got them to go to war with each other and do all their trade with me, it was simple for me to survive until I could culturally assimilate everyone. (Which is fairly slow given the vast space between the stars in this game type.)

I've just started another Maso Huge but with AIs at default alignment.

The map has 3 big patches of planets. I and the Yor share one at the bottom, Tors, Alts and Arcs share one at the NE and the Dregs get a big one all by itself in the NW. My plan is to wipe out the Yors then get the Goods/Neutrals in one patch to war against the Evil Dregs in the other.

My start isn't so good so this should an interesting game.

Update on my game. Had thoughts of abandoning this as I've not played against a Maso AI with this good a start before.
The Dregs are currently at war with everyone except me. It is year 6 and they already have 10 Dreads flying around among its Death Knights and Frigates. My fleet consists of 2 BHs and 4 BAs which I bought.

If Dregs succeed in assimilating any of the races, it's probably goodbye for me.

I'm producing transports now to take out my neighbour, the Yors.

8 years has elasped. Yors destroyed in a 2-stage assault (attack, peace, attack).

The Dregs (who now have 60+ dreads to my 3-4BHs) have not managed to defeat any of the Goods/Neutrals which I have all gotten up to Close and Friendly. My plan now is to pit the two forces against each other while I research up the tree and grab all the influence resources/TGs/wonders, etc. Then the influence attack to mop things up.

It's looking good. :)

Sounds like another example of the AI failing to focus its forces on capturing enemy planets and instead just sending ships around attacking everyone at random.

I just won a Maso conquest victory with a score of 8480. Is this a record low under 1.10?
On the plus side, it only took about 90 minutes, and I managed to avoid excess cheese. (Although at one point I made peace with the Yor, bought the Battle Hammer that was defending his star system, and then invaded immediately.)

Yes. It's year 12 now and Dregs have nothing to show for their massive superiority besides 1 minor planet.

My game is going according to plan. :)
Tor/Alt/Arc and Dreg Avatars are neutralising each other.

I believe so, Matthew. I can probably got a higher score under Calkwalk Tiny. :)

Mopping up my game. Should be able to submit tomorrow.

It was pretty easy actually. The Dregs were totally ineffective in using their military might.

Welcome to the Fellowship, BLVINDICATOR! Do drop by and say hi.

I'm going off to finish my game.

Submitted my Maso Huge game for 46k points. It was one that looked hard when I started but turned out to be rather easy. Once the Yors were defeated, the game was effectively won.

Just exceeded 300k on my Metaverse score but still require 1 more game to exceed that in PP terms.
Will be going for a Maso Gigantic to end off hopefully with Fleet Admiral.

Good morning!

Just getting around to this thread. I had a pretty busy weekend, only got to play GalCiv a couple of hours. Darn family picnics... LOL

Ray, looking forward to seeing that Fleet Admiral icon!

I think I mentioned earlier that the game I was working on was a Huge/Tough. Silly me, I forgot I changed it to Huge/Challenging. Duh! I thought it was going to easily! So I started a Huge/Tough yesterday. Don't know when I'll get it done...it's going to be a pretty busy week.

BLVINDICATOR, welcome to the Fellowship! I'll add your name to our roster page in just a few minutes! Just in case you haven't been to our website, it's at this http://www.angelfire.com/rings/fellowshipgalciv

Downie, low score or not, congrats on the Maso win! Maybe someday I'll win one myself! :D

Just submitted my first Huge for 1.10. Played through a pretty poor start--five yellow stars in the corner (galaxy had uncommon stars) but I used every sleazy cheese tactic in the book. Fun, in a different sort of way.

Well, damn. I just got out of a meeting at work. Announcement of corporate-wide layoffs. What a great way to start the week. Doesn't look like I'm in danger, but you never know in this economy. :notsure:
