Boots Skins (lookin BAD)

Hey peeps..

I have just joined you merry men (eh hem - and Ladies) and I am having a bit of a noob prob.

Changed my boot skin and it looks like S*** (well you get the jist).

Looks pretty much like its running in 256 colors and thats at a push.

Any1 able to help me out. and tell the noob what to do, as it seems a great waste of all your lovely pics when I boot up.

boot skins run in only 256 dolors i believe .. so basically you are seeing them they way we all see them ..

But it looks so BAD - Why make Nice picks whe they look so bad..? The windows logo looks ok with its colour..

Maybe there is something else. Remember I said 256 at a push but this is the matrix boot screen and the GREEN hyroglifs are an pff yellow\orange kind of colour.

Maybe somthing else plz,..

...its hard to create an image with only 16 colors and have it look good, with any picture there is going to be a loss of quality during the conversion... if you don't belive me, just try taking a relatively monotone wallpaper and converting it to 16 colors... you'll be surprised

There are only sixteen colours available at that point in time, so that's why the boot skins only have sixteen colours. Luckily, it's not a fixed palette, so there is some flexibility still.

The devs looked into doing something to be able to use more colours, but it wasn't feasible.

The 'trick' with Bootskins is to create a decent looking image with a limited 4 bit [16 colour] palette.

The annoying thing is that some artists 'want' their works to appear prettier and actually CHEAT with the previews making them full-colour [16.7 million] jpgs, rather than saving the 16 colour BMP image as a jpeg and creating a genuine, honest depiction of what the Bootskin actually looks like when applied.

This deception isn't the sole realm of the newbie or 'ignorant', but established skinning 'leaders' do it too.

I've called some of them to task over it as it is the equivalent of marketing a VW Beetle by showing a pic of a Porsche RSR.

aww man ya mean that porsche RSR i bought online for $13,000 is a fake? i thought it just got mangled during shipping .......
