Demo freezes

I downloaded the demo from Gamespot. I have only been able to get past March 2178 a few times. Most of the time, the Turn button will turn into the circular state and never return. This will happen as early as February 2178. I have tried swapping any and every game option, but it rarely gets past this date.

This demo, as it stands, is no way to evaluate this game. I certainly cannot afford to spend money on a full version when the demo won't play past game turn 2 or 3.

When this happens, is there a ship with moves left selected? If so, hitting space should cause the ship to be skipped.

Is a star system list open? If so, it could be a colony ship that had been on auto-pilot trying to colonize a planet, which you can do by left clicking on one of the planets.

It can also happen if you were viewing project completions on your planet data screen when you hit the done button. You can jog it out of this by exiting the planet screen, either by hitting done (if it's the last event) or by clicking on the starmap button.

I have the same problem, except it can happen anytime during the demo. The problem occurs about 1 game in 3. I've tried destroying all my ships, and going through all the menus clicking everything in sight, no luck. The space bar and the find button always take me to the same ship with a little beeping noise.

System is Win98, AMD T-bird, 384M RAM, 2 gig free disk space.

Does the problem still exist if you save, shut down gal civ, and then load that save game?

Have you ever had any trouble with the sound in Gal Civ? Maybe it's trying to bring up a dialog with music or a video and it gets stuck because of some error with the music or video.

Try updating your sound and video drivers and directx version.  You can also try installing the bink video tools from www.radgametools.com in case something else is associated with the .bik files.
