Changing resolution prior to startup?

I have a Philips 150B3 monitor. It cannot do resolutions above 1024x768@60hz or somesuch, and whenever I try to start GalCiv, the screen goes black (aka resolution out of range). Is there any way to force it to start up in 800x600 or something? I tried modifying my desktop settings, but that did no good.

Set your monitor to 1024x768 and then make yourself an icon that points directly to the GalCiv.exe file on your harddrive.  After the target, put a space and then a w.  So it will look something like this:

"C:\program files\stardock\galciv\galciv.exe" w

When you run GC with this icon it should start the game in windowed mode, which may fix the problem.

Thanks for the reply - oddly enough I fixed it by starting in 800x600 once, then popping back to 1280x768. Every start up since then (all two of them) have worked fine.

Strangest thing...I'm in 1024x800 with no problems running it normally, but with the w it pops up black rectangles for a split second then nothing happens...

Any way I can run it windowed?
