OK, I keep messing up. I am playing this like MOO 2(Master of Orion) and keep getting my butt kicked.

I have the opponents sewt to sub-normal. I build a few colony ships and am way behind already. AM I supposed to build 1 colony and then a constructor. Iyt seems the other guys already have 10 colonies by the time I get 2.

Is there an easy way to take systems. You seem to loose so much pop when attacking. You don't conquer the people as much as annihilate them.

What exactly does a space station giving you resources mean in game turns?

One of the things they never quite explain is the economic sliders. You should check those out first.

One of the sliders sets total spending as a percent of total capacity. The other three slider determine the portion of spending that gets relegated to each part of empire development.

Most players set spening to 100% and put about 75-80% in military to really churn out those colony ships.

Resources starbases are of little value early in the game. They only give you a 5% bonus in some aspect of your empire and they cost 5bc per turn in maintenance. Constructors are really expensive, too. Later in the game, resources are very important because they can be upgraded to give 68% bonus and can mean the difference between winning an losing. On smaller maps, I do not grab any resources initially and take them when the other races start fighting wars. On larger maps, I take what I can initially and trade for them later in the game.

Invading is very difficult because it takes both superiority in space and superiority with your troops. You'll need a good population base before you begin invasions and fill up several transports.

You do kill your enemy population. Based on initial conditions, 1 billion invading troops can reliably take out 2.5 billion defending troops with little to spare.
