Question about Planet Quality pick

Does this only effect the starting PQ of a planet or does it effect the planet each time a PQ upgrade is completed?

Dang it, I forgot to mention that what I am referring to is the PQ +5% option I chose when customizing my Human.

Sum up the bonuses to PQ, and then apply it one time.

So +5% PQ Racial Pick + 10% SE + 10% HI = +25% total. Base 16 PQ planet becomes a 20 PQ planet.

But that is only later in the game when you have those enhancements right? What about in the early game, when all you have is +5% PQ racial pick??

Sum up the bonuses and then apply it one time. ;)

Scenario:
PQ 15 planet
+5% Racial Pick. 15 * 5% = 15.75. Round down to 15.

Later in the game, you build Soil Enhancement.
PQ 15 planet
+5% Racial Pick + 10% SE = +15% * 15 = 17.25. Round down to 17.

The sum of your PQ bonuses are applied to the original base PQ of the planet, always.

I do understand now. So, your +5% PQ may not do you much in the beginning, but later as you progess in the game and build up the planet, it adds to the bonus you receive then. I do have one more newbie question about late game planet improvements. When colonizing class 14 planets they jump to class 16. Is this due to the Terraformer that I built or are there other things affecting the planet? These are planets without any event boosting the PQ.

Don't sweat asking newbie questions, we were all there at one time. :)

14s jump to 16 with a mere 15% bonus. So yes, the Terraformer grants a 10% bonus civ-wide. Combined with your 5% Racial pick, you have +15%.

Personally, I find the +5% pick a nice bonus and reasonably priced. I never use the 7% bonus, though. You should check out the Strategy forum, there's been many discussions on what picks to use and why.

Good luck!

There is this wonderful PQ pick chart over here: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=78384

Robert, one advantage of the +5% PQ pick is what you are focusing on: what it does to planets you have already decided to colonize. The other one is, IMO, more important, and that's that it lets you colonize planets that you otherwise would not. If there's a 14 between you and a rich virgin star field, it makes sense to colonize it so you can send your colony ships beyond it. It may (or may not) make sense to colonize 14's inside the AI's territory. It can help with cultural conquest of them, provided you can hold on to this planet before it defects!
