The intent of these Awards is to reward the efforts of our writers who have added so much color and life to the Meta-universe that we have here in the Forum.

The Awards would be given out every 4 months. The period of the inaugural Awards would be from 1 Apr 2003 to 31 Jul 2003.

A total of three Awards would be given out:

The Altarian Gold Star
The Altarian Silver Star and
The Altarian Bronze Star

This thread would contain the Award rules and regulations. I will open another thread named The Altarian Star Awards Nominations which would allow each of you to nominate up to a maximum of 3 stories that you believe is deserving of an Award.

The deadline for nominations would be 3 Aug, Sunday 2359 EST.

Once nominations are closed, a committee of neutrals will shortlist the most deserving nominations for the final vote. Each Metaverse registered Galciver then will have one vote that they may cast in a closed ballot. The 3 nominees with the highest number of votes will be honored with the Awards.

The nominations should be in the following format.

Author
Excerpt of the work that you are nominating (in quotes)
Short commentary on its context / Reason for your nomination

Note that you are nominating for the best stories, not the best authors so it is possible for an author to receive multiple nominations for different stories written.

That’s all the rules and regulations that I could think of now. I may add others if the need arises.

Um, it's an idea you had Ray. Maybe go with it and see if any egos get crushed. I warn you, my ego is fragile so if I got nominated and didn't win...well. Do you have public liability insurance?

From what i've seen there are realy only about half a dozen ppl who write these stories... I for one like them all.. although some of them are a bit long / msg bases.. it takes so long to read them.. I think that instead of singling out individual srories...(as most are follow ons from prevous stories and build up into a nice collection , mini novel if you like to call it that..) that it should simply be for the ppl who have made the metaverse interesting and gived it charactor.. tose who have done things to make ppl want to come back or stirred ppl into action. there shouldn't be any need to state why... as ppl reading the forums will know why.. and those who don't wouldn't bother about voting.. also believe it should be a monthly thing.. then all the monthly winners then go into a 3 monthly / 6 monthly / anual contest to see just who is the most populor over time... this way it'll encourage more input from others if they can see that its not going to take fowever to see results ..

I agree that there should be something done to encourage and reward those who make the forum an interesting place to live... not just a text book of facts about the game

It's always interesting to read different views on things. The award system is the one used in every walk of life from literature to art and cinema.

The only other method is to have, say, a shortlisting of works to 3 or 5 or whatever, without any one being voted "best". It could be done every calendar month and showcase examples of the endevours of the writers.

Nonetheless, Ray had the idea and he is proposing to pursue the management of it to a result, unlike me who is too bloody lazy to even contemplate the work involved. Good ideas should be supported.

I noticed you've extended the nomination date but threatened to scrap the event if you don't receive enough nominations. I would suggest you don't scrap it but just run it as an ongoing nomination. I'm not going to spend time reading back through old posts for nominations but if it is always running I may nominate something I like when I read it. What would be totally cool is if you could convince Stardock to add a nominate button to the forum to just click on when you read a thread you like (bit of a dream though).

Threatening may be too strong a word, Paul. :)

I'm a believer in that if an idea is not fun or not working out, we should move on and let it die a natural death.

But your suggestion is good. We could leave the nominations open and have the awards when we do get a critical mass of nominations.

Let's see how it goes and make a decision on Wednesday.

Isolating one artist and saying his work is better or is the favorite over others can leave a very negative effect on current and new artists.

Good praise in general may be a better way to go, ie. A HALL of FAME ; voters can nominate and you can add a few into the Hall of fame . Or singled out best one liners in a story.

Artists may feel overlooked or misunderstood for their great efforts. This could have more of a negative effect than the positively affect your looking for in OUR G.C. FAMILY!

But then again I'm only speculating your friend MM77

Thanks for the warning, my friend.

Wombat raised this issue a few days ago as well. After some discussion, we thought we should just continue and hope no one's ego get hurt if they don't get nominated.

Personally, as this is just for fun, I don't mind trying it out for once. If the response is poor and/or if people in general feel crummy/neglected, then we will not hold a sequel.

Hmmm... let's enter the world of "Kit's perspective". No, on second thought, let's just listen to what he has to say.

For a Hall of Fame, numerous worthy stories will be left out for this “period”. But for the Pirate Lore I’m working on, I’ve noticed that I desperately need some filter... ANY filter. So should this Altarian Star Award transform into a way to package a “selection” of GalCiv stories into one location? Hmmm...

“Winners”... ? This is just another filter, isn’t it? With this option, the offsite will simply have stories labeled 1, 2, and 3. I figure all of the nominated stories will still be there so it’s not much different from a Hall of Fame. This “winners” option seems to come down to hurt egos. In other words, does it ultimately discourage or encourage writers?

I’m not ashamed to admit that I “compete” with other writers on this forum, but not once did I ever seek to be labeled as “1st Place”. Because I cannot account for the motivations of other authors, I’ll just have to cast a vote based on my own approach to story telling. Oh yeah, that’s all you wanted in the first place, wasn’t it? ;)

I'll accept the task of collating the votes. Probably best to set up a new email adress to send votes to. With that in mind I've set up the following address

If we get people to send their votes to that address then we can keep votes private. To vote people need to include their vote and their Galciv forum ID.

I vote for a hall of fame, BUT with ONLY 3 nominations making it into the hall of fame. How many votes each achieved and in what order should remain secret. Therefore there would be 3 new entrants to the hall of fame every award ceremony.

I disagree with every nomination being alllowed into the hall of fame because thats far more likely to cause disagreements. Nominations need to be voted upon. If this takes off big time then we can always expand the numbers based on number of votes.

Just to be dramatic and make this whole thing bigger than Ben Hur, I feel compelled to say that it was wrong of me to nominate the writings of 2 people who had indicated they didn't agree with the whole thing. I apologise to them, my only defence being that... well... I don't actually have one. I just couldn't help myself.

Some quick points:

I have come across several posts which are along the lines of: "I may not write well" or "whilst I haven't been nominated..". I gather that is what some readers have started to think.

Anyone reading about an award for doodlings must think it very pretentious.

The pieces are taken totally out of context.

Award systems are used for professional authors and artists, and don't relate to stories on a Galciv thread.

Hardly anyone has nominated many pieces, so I think that the vast silent majority are not fussed with the whole thing, or have a bad reaction to the concept.

I know that Ray was trying to do something that was fun and for the Galciv community. However, a level of anxiety has arisen over the mere concept.

My preference would be that the nominations are just taken to be examples of what is out there, and we leave it at that. So that good has come out of the whole exercise.
Nor do I want my doodlings to be voted on in any context.

To me, this Awards has passed from the fun realm into the "I feel bad if I'm not nominated" and "My works are for fun and not for competition" realms.

Personally, I thought we could just showcase a number of good stories, give the writers some recognition and lots of cheers and then move on.

It seems that we have started to treat this with the seriousness of real-life awards where winning or losing are important.

Cmon guys, are u all really that affected by awards that will only appear on a webpage in the form of pixels? Do you seriously get discouraged if you don't get nominated or win?

I'm not upset here but just feel rather incredulous over the reactions this Award has generated. :)

Let's call this thing off and move on to other fun stuff.
