Forgive me, it's Christmas

it’s Christmas time again
everyone with an expectation of receiving a gift
from someone—even a hope
a trinket that says in a dime store motif
someone gives a shit—even a little bit
everyone wants to be baby jesus
to be adored and worshipped
to count and they want the gifts to
prove it
but we forget the treasure of the magi
bought safety
frankensense to cover the smell of poverty
and oppression
myrrh to preserve His body in death
gold to flee to Egypt from herod’s bloodlust
it’s comfort short-lived and foreboding of portents
to come
This was Christmas
a time of glory, anxiety, persecution, death, and a hope and a prayer
still, it remains the same today
only our anxiety lies in dollars spent and pounds gained
I’d like to believe that I will be above measuring my worth
in the number of gifts received and parties invited, but the silence
of Christmas in America leaves me feeling just so deep
