Rank Newbie part 3, the waiting game

Okay, every PQ 15 or better planet has been colonized, and I've even colonized some of the 12s 13s and 14s and terraformed them.

At this point, it's only me, the Torians, and the Yor left. The Yor are leading militarily, the Torians are leading technologically, and I'm leading in cultural influence. The Torians are allied with both me and the Yor, but the Yor are not allied with me.

I have built up my military to prevent the Yor invading me, and indeed relations with them have gone all the way from Cool to Warm. I gave them one of my colony planets, but it immediately flipped back to me on cultural influence bonuses. (Unfortunately all their other planets are too well defensed to simply flip to me.) Nevertheless, my lead with Cultural dominance is slowly widening, and I expect that I will win with culture...eventually...*if* one of the others doesn't win with Technology first. So the Alliance victory looks like my best bet.

My question; what can I do to make the Yor ally with me? I gave them a planet, and that didn't work. I tried the "1 influence point" trick I've seen elsewhere, and that didn't work either. If my influence goes high enough, will that be enough to make them feel Close to me, so I can propose alliance?

try and start wars between the two without involving yourself. then give them both semi useful ships?

it might not work but at least it'll be fun.

remember, both parties have to have the "alliance" tech before they can form an alliance. you probably already know this, but just making sure.

some AIs in some of the games are difficult to get into an alliance with them, even though you have good relations with them.

Note first of all that AIs can't win via technology. They can only win via military.

My understanding is that you can only get up to Friendly though gifting. You need to trade with them to get up to Close.

Influence does not affect relations AFAIK. But if your military and economic might is comparatively strong, their relations with you will improve due to fear.

Arcalian,

Unless you're talking about the Caranoids, planets will flip to you eventually no matter how well defending they are.

If you're stronger than the Torians, you can start putting culture mods on Star bases in their terriority without them complaining (this works at Tough or lower), or ruining your alliance.

There planet should start flipping to you. Once that happens your influence will overwhelm the Yor...

The Yor also seem to slow to react when attacked... if you wish you can probably swarm them with transports and if you can take 3-4 systems in a turn, probably make yourself stronger and get peace.

The AI is pretty bad at attacking, you can figure out where the transports are going and pick the off.. so unless an AI is MUCH stronger than you don't worry about picking a fight. (I don't build combat ships before corvettes and I play evil -so I generally end up fighting 2-3 wars with stronger foes early in the game, except on crippling I have yet to lose a system.)

Good Luck,
Cypher

"...they can only win with military."

So do they just not research final frontier then? They reach the top of the technology tree and just stop? So eventually I'll catch up and pass them?

I'm alraedy trading with the Yor, I guess I need to trade *more*.

Thanks again all.

They will research FF and stop. Consequently, we have the cheesy tech victory of buying FF from an AI and win. Or accidently capturing FF through invasion and win via tech victory.
