Ack! Metaverse spam e-mail?

What is the nature of these emails? Who is the sender? What makes you think they are the fault of GalCiv?

Do you have "Watch Thread" turned on for any forum threads? A "watched" thread will send you emails whenever the thread is updated.

That one is easy: I am getting emails from MULTIPLE people, and I think it is the immediate result of me subscribing to MetaVerse. I played a couple games right afterwards, and there the emails were.

And as far as I know, I don't have watch thread on. And can anyone tell me how to stop those e-mails if I do have 'em on?

Hmmm... doesn't sound like it's being caused by the watch thread option. "Watch Thread" emails are always from "GalCiv" or something like that and are obviously links back to this forum.

Have you tried replying back to one of the emails and asking what's up? Sorry, I'm not much help on this one.

I don't believe in co-incidences either JEKrug01. But your querrie is the first time I've ever heard of such a thing in Galactic Civilizations! Ad-Alerts great and free to run, can't hurt.

Also try sending an e-mail to the ISP abuse services, I get the impression they can nip your problem in the butt. Others here are much more knowledgable about such things that I. (Once again I'm beguining to sound like Master Yoda . . . hehe).

Yea, a hundred e-mails IS a lot. And you know what makes it worse? EVERY LAST ONE has a .pif file attachment of about 73 kilo's in size each. Any ideas on what THAT could be?

There have been a lot of dangerous viruses floating around latley. I'd be careful, so should anyone else. Be vigilant and be on your toes.

It has nothing to do with GalCiv. Two new e-mail viruses poppwed up about three days ago that exploit Outlook Express. Sobig.F@mm, in particular, has hit alot of sites, including several major universities.

The huge mails your recieving are mail daemons returning messages to the person they (incorrectly) think sent the mail with the original message (including the virus) as an attachment.

What is happening is someone who has your email address has been infected with one of these two virii, and the virus spams random addresses with the From header forged to show the address of someone in that person's address book. The recieving mailer daemon realizes that the attachement is probably infected and returns the message as undeliverable, but because the From: header is forged, you get it instead of the person that's infected. If the mail daemon returns the whole message, you could end up infected as well if your not careful.

i believe a .pif file is the spoor of the Sobig virus. it's another reason why i use Netscape.....

Couple of nasty email viruses (virii?) doing the rounds - basically they'll forge the "to" and "from" addresses using entries in the infected persons address book. The virus typically looks like a .pif or .scr file - but you may actually find it's got a "double extension" which a lot of programs don't show.

A look on Symantec (Norton) or McAfee's sites will tell you a lot more.

Basically it is ESSENTIAL to run reliable and up-to-date antivirus software these days, and if you are on DSL or other permanent link to the internet, to use at least a router (properly locked down) or a firewall.

Stardock may want to respond, but I don't think they sell email addresses. I registered with a private (spam free address - not connected to my browser profile) and it's stayed SPAM free in the 3+ months I've been registered.
