Cheese?

In the last 2 games I've had I have been doing a lot of trade with a minor and everone elese goes to war with it.
To counteract this I use the old cheesy tactic of putting 8 ships round his planet as a blocade. The minor can get ships out, but the ai cannot attack. This kind of acts as a real planetory blocade protecting the planet.

The next thing I do is max out a starbase in the minors sector and give it to him making it a tough target. Is this cheese or just protecting your friends / trade interests?

I don't think giving starbases to minors is cheesy. It's a valid tactic to support a friend.

I agree, I did that once before. I was culturally dominating the galaxy, consuming everyones planets, and I realized that my closest friend and trade partner the Altarians would suffer the same fate eventually even though they were on the other side of the galaxy. So, I built about 25 constructors and sent them over to their home planet and installed every culture influence module there was including ones from mods and installed production enhancing modules. Just that by itself ensured that the Altarians lasted until the end of the game.
