I was in Monterey when John had his accident...

Um... John, you have an ai that actually built a terror star? :notsure: I've heard the ai doesn't know how to use them.

I have never seen an AI build a terror star. But if it does, why can't you clobber it just like you would a starbase? If there aren't too many defense modules built into the terror star, a dreadnaught should work. Use whatever you use to attack starbases and let us know what happens. :)

Rabid Rob sez...

Just keep hitting it with Antimatter missiles. Rabid Rob's Space Casino gives good odds that 2 or 3 will kill anything!

Altho I like the idea of buying it from them better, heh.

Have fun! :CONGRAT:

In my last game, I saw one of the AIs building up a major attack SB, I thought he might be prepping one for a terror star. It actually had a number of these SB built in my sectors (no influence upgrades though). I managed to destroy every one of them in a single turn. All it took was 1 corvette, the Hero and 3 maxed trasports.

Maybe he meant after the UP event that lets you give transports attack values (I think it can go up to 20).
Meh. Excaliburs solve EVERY foreign relations problem you can possibly run into in GC.
even with the 20 the UP can give you, you still can't attack with them. But when he only has 3 planets, it's easy. LOL

I didn't know there was an Excalibur defense module, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be necessary if you have every other defense module installed, unless the AI has some massive starship bonus. IIRC, all of them combined give you a defense rating of about 91.

I havent had Excaliburs in last few games (as you can tell by my numbers) but the defense module adds +48 to the starbase defense. It doesnt yet work as the module gets built but the defense bonus doesnt get added. Even if it did work, it wont be enough to save the base. A 2nd excalibur defense upgrade of +96 (48x2) might give the base a chance to survive: 210 def vs 300 attack.

has anyone ever built an excalibur before the tech win?

I have. Way back when I started playing gal civ I created a game where every civ was set to normal intelligence, the map was a size normal, and everyone was set to pure good. While none of us ever got into any wars with each other (Though we bashed some of the minor civs ;p ) , it served as a good learning experience for tech trading and I learned the power of culture stars. In the end, I had a massive empire with manufacturing starbases in all of my inhabited sectors, maxed trade starbases in all of the sectors I had freighters in, and a defense perimeter with every starbase equipped with full defense and an Avatar Ship as a guard. While throughout the game I was constantly last in the military department, in the endgame I built several excaliburs and my military value rocketed up.

I have never seen an AI build a terror star.

In the game mentioned above, I've seen AIs building terror stars. Keep in mind that this was a universe with all pure good civs, where terror stars had been illegalized through the UP :notsure: . I traded for one of the terror stars, and to my surprise. It couldn't move.

the reason i refuse to build terror stars in the window version of Gal Civ is their movement speed of 1. they are totally useless in any galaxy size larger than tiny. its a shame because they look so much nicer than the old os/2 terror stars.
How fast were the old terror stars?

The old os/2 terror stars had the same movement speed as transports. It made them extremely dangerous.
Wow dangerous indeed, did the AI happen to know how to build them by any chance?
the AI built them and knew how to use them. I lost few systems to those stars. They cost 5000 shields to build as there were no constructors in the old os/2 game. SOP was to deploy several drones around your stars to spot stars sneaking in.

I agree that they should up the movement of a terror star. Perhaps that could be through tech advancement(or a series of SB modules each increasing it by 1 movement point[at least there would be some cost involved in making it more useful.]). Using a terror star ought to be a morality issue though. BTW, can a terror star attack a ship? I've never tried.

Brad said Terror Stars destroys Stars and will only move at 1, no matter how many speed techs you research. It would be nice if they attached ships like the Death Star did in Star Wars but :notsure:

Fast moving terror star might unbalance the game a bit. I think it would be cool if you could "disassemble" the terror star, move the separate pieces fairly quickly and the rebuild it in it's new location. It would be kind of a futuristic seige weapon.
Ohh.. No... Not the Transforming Terror Star..

Transformers.... More than meets the eye. LOL

In Starwars (correct me if i'm wrong) the Death Stars didn't actually attack ships.. it was the Death Star defending itself from being attacked..

This would have been because it was soooo big that it can't manouver. thats why its defences were so great (not good enough though) and it was designed to be a planet killer nothing else really

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

No difference between a fast moving completed ship, and a fast moving assembly package. One just has more micromanagement.

Or, they could be designed fast but fairly easy to kill. A big ugly all gun flying wooly-booger.

In "Return of the Jedi" the Death Star used it's primary weapon to take out a Rebellion capital ship. But I agree with your thinking. The terror star should be vulneralble to regular ships to balance the game, and would require a fleet to defend it.
they did not unbalance the os/2 game. they are expensive to built and maintain. in my os/2 games, they were protected by 2 or more capitol ships.
I refuse to build them now as they are totally useless in larger galaxies.
