In Feudal China, hordes of warriors determined to be 'losers' were consigned to death. Then, when the stage was set for a battle, these 'losers' were ordered to start the battle. Upon contact with the enemy, they would cut their throats while uttering a great cry, and viciously fight until they dropped dead from their self-inflicted throat cutting. If a warrior who was consigned to this death survived, his whole family was then put to death.
