Installation hangup

When I try and install GV, all the program does is hang and at the install screen and eventually I get the Not Responding message. I've tried running it from the Run menu and it hangs there as well. I've also tried installing it from my read/burner drive and it hangs at the installation screen. Anyone have any similar problems and could you share your solutions? I would appreciate any help.

I thought it was the CD at first but when I exchanged it, I still have the same problem.

I'm running a 1ghz AMD Athalon with 512 MB and Win XP.

I had a similar problem before. You might want to check what kind of graphic card you've got on your system. If you read your manual or the small paper that came with your game package, it will say what kind of graphic card will work with GC.

I have a NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 2000 64 MB RAM which according to the recommended requirements, far exceeds what the game requires.

This is the first time since I installed XP that I ever had a game hang up in the install screen so I don't know if its an XP issue or the game. Once I click on 'Install' it just sits there then I get the Not Responding message.

Since I can't return the game at Best Buy due to thier store policy I'm hoping I didn't buy a $40 beer can coaster. :sniff!:

It could be that the CD player is too old for the copy protection used on the CD, I meself don't have the cd version so i can't say for sure.. However In the past i've had problems loading some other software on older CD rom Drives.. a perfect example jumps to mind.. Links 2001 wouldn't install from my old CD drive (I've since updated my cd drive and it loads properly). Some forms of protection software check to see if its being accessed from a cd burner.. this too causes some problems. If you can I suggest you try it on another (preferable newer) cd drive (preferably not a cd burner). I don't know what sort of copy protection system they used to make their CD so I can't help more..

I had the same problem with a new 2.6 ghz puter. I tried everything to get the game to install, updated everything, deleted some things what a nightmare!!! Then one day I put the CD in and got the usual "program not responding" message as the CD drive just droaned on. I went to the kitchen to get a drink and when I came back the install screen magicly appeared. I suggest that you just give it more time. After clicking install, just give it about 10 minutes and see if dont bring up the install screen. Best of luck!!!!

Wittman, make sure you have the most up to date drivers. There is a known problem with the Athlon CPU and DirectX. I seem to remember that NVidia had some problems with the AMD as well, but got it fixed with updated drivers.
Go to WindowsUpdate first, then NVidia.

I had exactly similar problems with the install! When I started the install, the application hung, so following the excellent advice here, I downloaded stardock, registered the game and then downloaded galac civ. All works fine and I have even burnt a copy onto a disk!
Thanks all for your advice!!

Thanks for the tip. I did the same thing and just let it sit for awhile and lo and behold the install screen popped up and I was good to go. Never had a game take so long like that so I naturally thought something was wrong.

Now looking forward to the game! Thanks to everyone for their input! :)
