Changing Ship Names

I read in another post that it is possible to change ship names by clicking on the name in one of the ship screens. I've tried this, but haven't been able to highlight any ship name to change it. What am I doing wrong?

go to the main screen. the space one where you move ships around. select a ship. at the bottom you see something like USS Hero. click it and then type in name you want.
