about Universal Translators

As I may have mentioned, I'm waiting for my finances to get a bit better before buying this game, so I'm squeezing the demo for all its worth LOL

Anyhue, I was wondering how many of you have opted to not research UTs? I notice you can still vote in the UP, and you still get declarations of war in english. I think it should be possible to win, if somewhat tougher than normal (no trade, no tech whoring) but only the Alliance Victory is 100% ruled out, if I've read the Tech tree correctly. Though obviously a Military conquest is best suited. Just as a different kind of challenge.

Is it possible to win without Universal Translators?

Oh, and I'm still somewhat amussed on an x-pac being released 4 days after the game hit the shelves :CONGRAT: ;)

Its suppose its possible under the easiest difficulties, but UTs lead to most of the diplomatic techs as well as trade I believe. Those are extremely important to winning at the harder levels.

Yeah, I was finding that it was difficult to keep my economy up. My production dropped right off too, just enough star fighters and transports to take one of the minors out of the running, then back to pumping all my resources into research to get better ships :notsure:

And, yeah, I was playing on "simple" :P even then 12 years isn't long enough to win :(

You know I've always wondered, shouldn't it be made so that you can talk to each AI as they get UT, regardless whther you have it or not? Kinda defeats the purpose of having a UT if you need one on both ends :P

On harder levels, definitely not. UT leads to other techs that you may need.

More importantly, I haven't heard of anyone beating maso without using diplomacy. Maybe on tiny rare through intensive rushing?

You could get techs above universal translators from invading planets. So you may get some of the higher govbernment types. Would make for an interesting game.

Oh, and Bob, the game was only relased in parts of Europe on the 12th Sept, it was initially launched on 26th March in the States.

Well - this version was! The original game goes back to the mid '90s on OS/2!

I realise its really been out for ages, but as I only found out about it due to a review in PCGamer and the demo on its cover disc :p

@kryofx: Maybe the UTs only translate from any language into one language...?

I think the biggest problem would be keeping up the economy and morale without any trade or many of the economic social projects :notsure:

I may give it a shot again sometime once I've got the game proper.

You can always trade for higher techs in diplomacy and keep researching higher diplomacy techs as long as base requirements met.Without having universal translator.

Thing is, without UTs, you can't _talk_ to other civs to trade for the techs. The only way you could get a tech with UTs as a pre-req is through an invasion (which you'll be doing alot) or through the UP resolution to share techs.

Also now with the expansion, espionage seems to work for stealing techs like it's supposed to. In my last game alone, I stole several techs (Good ones too, even the alignment-specific techs) from the Drengins and Altarians over the course of the game!
