Bink videos make me CTD

Greetings all,

I have always had frequent CTDs, but with 1.10.072, there are so many more that they are making it impossible for me to play the game.

I enabled SmartException and I'm seeing consistent access violations, sometimes in the galciv module, sometimes in the bink dll.

I had the drengin.net beta, which had fewer crashes. It seems that whatever is causing the crash was introduced between the 1.10 release and the 1.09C beta. =(

I'm posting the exception report. I hope this isn't poor netiquette.

I had same problem with 1.05 and did this to fix it.
Look in galciv/movies directory and find the movie that crashes and rename it.
Example the first intro movie caused me to crash alot.
The name is intro.bik and I renamed it to disabledintro.bik.
This stopped alot of the startup crashes I was seeing.
Pay attention next time you crash when movie starts and try renaming the file.

If you're getting crashes with bink videos, it's one of two things:

1) something like Quicktime took over your bink associations. go to www.radgametools.com and download the bink toolset.  Installing it should re-claim your associations.

2) you're having some kind of audio conflict.  WinDVD and winamp3 are known to have bad codecs.  What media players do you have other than Windows Media Player?

Updating sound and video drivers can sometimes help, too.

Aha! I do have winamp2 installed, but it is a recent install. Is it likely that they packaged some new (and possibly faulty) codecs with the old WA2 binaries? I uninstalled winamp, but it didn't bother to remove any codecs.

Is anyone aware of specific codecs that cause problems? If I knew which ones were troublemakers, I am pretty certain I could remove them explicitly from the control panel. :SURPRISED:

Don't know, but I'm looking for the fix for this. Had a great history of being CTD free... In 1.10, only had that coded accident of clicking a survey ship. 1.10A corrected that. Got in a GAME under 1.10A fine. Then, today, before firing up GalCiv, I started StarDock Central. It auto-updated with 3 quick files, and now, no more GalCiv! :( I've reported this in the 1.10 bug thread (stickied), and tried everything that Ray was helpful enough to search out and find (like CariElf's advise).

I went so far to rename both intros to .old, and try that, and that just results in a very fast CTD. :( So even the setup screen, in both GalCiv.exe and GalCivW.exe are now crashing.

I'm sure Star Dock will get us straightened out quickly. They've always been very great in the past at doing so.

Clutching for straws here..

Have you installed any other game that uses bink..

I've had problems where i've installed old games with old binkw32.dll files.

Most games will(and should) put this file in the game directory that you are currently installing and will not affect other games. If it is put in a windows system directory it can make other games to use the wrong dll file and cause electron chaos.

edit:too many words for one sentence.

Bakka... nope. The only thing that had changed between 1.10A working, and now GalCiv will not work, was that StarDock Central auto-updated, and then FORCED a reboot. Now, GalCiv no workie at all. :( I've de-installed GalCiv, and tried older versions. No joy. Deinstalled those and tried reinstalling the latest. No joy.

Not sure what else to do. Not even my GalCiv of CD (version 1.00) will work. SDC has fried out something, but everything else I've tried still works. I downloaded the RadGameTools Bink package, and the Bink player in it has no problem playing any of the GalCiv bink movies... not Intro, sf_intro, Menu, StarBase_1 and StarBase_2 (whatever those files are REALLY named).

At a complete loss...

I've checked the registry and I didn not notice anything out of place in it for GalCiv or StarDock entries... just the sort of info you expect to see there. Well, that I do. Serial number, Player Name, Versions, etc.

Looks like I'm not going to be playing any more GalCiv for a while. :sniff!:

It's very odd. Everything is up to date, but it doesn't want to work. Maybe my computer just decided it doesn't like GalCiv? That's the only thing left, isn't it?

Any help or suggestions are *very* welcome...
