This is really getting on my nerves..

I dunno if this is a bug or not, but it's still something that's really starting to annoy me. It's happened once or twice before, but this is the first game it's effected me critically.

Anyway.. My problem is I can't attack anyone. I got a big group of ships ready, sent them out to the Yor's homeplanet (I'm at war with them), but instead of blowing them away like they should, they just sit there infront of the planet, and the game won't move onto the next turn until I click on them (Thus canceling their attack), and they just get picked off by all the smaller ships the Yor own. And if they actually do something, it'll just be that they moved on top of the planet, still not attacking it.

Now I'm going to have to start my game all over again, and I'd spent several hours on it.. Sigh. Frustration. >:(

(EDIT: I figure I might as well add that I tried this with several planets, too.)

save, quit, restart and load the save game. I have had this happen twice with 1.05 and this worked ok both times.

ummm.... check your diplomatic status.. you may be allied...
or
check the ships you have..

as far as i know only combat transports can invade planets.
all other (attacking)ships that you take there can only attack ships that are in orbit

hope this helps

I tried reloading it, and it seems to be working now..

And nah, we weren't allied or anything.. Little bastards had been Wary of me the whole game. :notsure:

I think I should add that I was just trying to take out the ships in orbit, too. I did have some transports, but mainly I was just going for their defenders.

And they cannot do that until your attack ships have taken out the defenders.

Ditto! In my last game I couldn't Terror Star a planet at all . . . click, click, nothing? I just ended up invading instead with Combat Transports . . . I thought it was just me but this has happened a couple times in the last few games after I downloaded 1.10a . . . reloading seems to help.

ummm.... might sound stupid... but... do you have one of the transports selected as your trying to attack?? If you dont have an attacking ship selected (in this case, the transports), you wont attack the ships defending the planet, even if your ships are in a fleet.

One time I had a couple of Torian ships parked in the same square as a planet of mine. I never saw them move there (though they might have when I wasn't paying attention.) and they never moved away. I just saw a little green 2 in the lower left corner of the square. Didn't figure out why it was there until I tried to bring a Frigate back into orbit and it instead it attacked the ships that were there. Not the same as your problem, but another star system oddity. It was also annoying, because I couldn't bring a constructor into orbit to escape a warship that was chasing it.

Great game and all but it's buggy as all get out. Of all the games I have ever played, this one, as far as playability is horrid. CTDs are rampant. Unless the developers can make a patch that fixes this stuff, looks like all I have is a $40 beer coaster. >:(

Wittman, hate to say this, but the problem is probably at your end. If CTDs were so bad, the entire forum would already be up in arms. There was a survey ship crash bug introduced in GCX but the fix was put out shortly.

try changing your color settings from 32 to 16 bit. i had CTD every turn when playing on 32 bit mode, but never on 16 bit.

That's possibly true although I have no idea what it could be on my end. Like I said, I play tons of games and never had CTDs this bad. I was playing last night and when the Torian's invaded one of my planets, CTD.

My settings already were at 16.

Try going to 32 bit. The truth is, this is a very stable game for the large majority of players.

Yeah, I've had the game since May or June I believe and it hasn't crashed once for me yet.

I still get CTDs rarely . . . it kinda bothers me only a little, I think the programing/code is pretty unique so it's to be expected. I'm sure if SDs buget was bigger a lot of things could be resolved . . . inter compatibility wise.

Unfortunately GC seems to have become pigeon holed by some critics and seems to appeals to only a particular kind of statergy gamer . . . mabye it's just a small niche market. :notsure:

yeah, just mess around with your color settings, my problem was 32 bit color, but yours may be having it on 16 instead of 32. And you do have the latest patch, right whitman? Other than that.... can't think of too much that would be causing stability problems.

I've found GC to be very stable. 1.10 had a few serious bugs (like click survey's 'ii and CTD), but Star Dock fixed that, very quickly. Star Dock has been seriously fantastic on support.

Wittman, if you have repeatable CTDs, I'm sure Star Dock would like to have a copy of your save games (and your game version info) to see if they could see what is causing it. They always have in the past.

Speaking of game info... are you having these problems after several hours of game play, or quickly (within the first hour)? I've noticed GC does like to CTD afte a long marathon when there's a many, many, many ships flying about... Often, after one of those CTDs, restarting the game again after that, I cannot get the CTD to repeat. Doesn't happen as often as it used to (haven't seen it yet, knock on wood, with 1.10A, but that's still new).

Anyways, it's a good and stable for most. Some people had lots of CTDs due to a corrupt media file, and could only get that fixed by reinstalling the game. If you have frequent CTDs, that might be what is causing it.

Question1: Are you perhaps running a ram defragmenter..

I've had some programs crash on me when using them.. So no i don't use them

even programs like TweakXP can be causing it.. (It has a ram defragmenter built in) i'm sure that there is other software like out there too..

Question2: Is your Video card and or computer been tweaked.. ie: Clock speeds etc..

Your CPU or Graphics card may be over heating or just running to fast for their own good. Games Like Galciv really give computers a good work out.

Another suggestion is that it may be a faulty RAM chip.. as GalCiv uses a lot of it..

also when was the last time you defragmented your hard drive.. and also how much free space is left on it.. and what is the size of your swapfile.. (I always let windows decide how bigh it'll go that way it shouldn't run out of ram unless my HD gets too full

I hope that your not suffering from any of the above
If so i hope i've helped you out of your delemour

Wittman most ctd are caused by buggy codecs from winamp or other mp3 players. If you search this forum for audio codec and download it ,this should clear up most of your problems.I don't remember exactly which link had this codec but it cleared up most of my ctd at first also.
Now maybe once a month I might get a ctd but that could be anything such as Windows.

Wittman. Increase the size of the Windows Swap File.

That will cure your problem.
Make it 3MB if you have enough RAM spare.
Actually your swap file should be 1.5 times your ram size.Example 256kb ram x 1.5=384kb.But basically it is best to let windows handle this.If set to small then even regular windows apps will fail.To large and alot of page swapping will happen which could slow down overall system performance.

If you are very knowledgable with computers then yes tweak it.But some ppl probably are new to computers and tweaking something they don't know what it does can be dangerous. Some older OS are very bad at managing the swap file and the newer ones handle this better.Just be careful and make any notes you need to undo something if it doesn't give you the desired results.
Senator Eradicus :HOT:
But yes Rainbird I agree with you.
