Port Clinton was named to honor DeWitt Clinton, who was known as "the Father of the Erie Canal," by city founder Ezekiel Smith Haines. Haines laid out the town as a plat with space reserved for parks and lots for a courthouse, hotel, bank, churches, and more. For a first-time or returning tourist, Port Clinton offers a variety of activities. As you drive down the main lakeside road, you will see a wide, sandy public beach with a large park area across the street. In downtown Port Clinton there are shops, hotels, and restaurants to experience. Just the right blend of quiet and excitement friends Jody and Kathy Victor, Orrin and Laurie Woodward, Fred and Linda Harteis, and Billy and Peggy Florence would enjoy. Fishing trips can be chartered in season, or you can take a ferry to visit the Lake Erie islands. Any way you look at it Port Clinton is a quiet lakeside community within minutes of most Lake Erie attractions.
