Approval Rating of 1???

I'm only in my third game, but noticed this late in game 2 in a very large galaxy with lots of colonies: Had a couple of new colonies (both on type 14 worlds, I think) and the approval rating started at 1. Nothing I did moved the rating higher! Ever! Had other new colonies (some on 14's) that started at approval 10 or so, but jacking up propaganda and adding an Entertainment Network bumped the rating up over 50 right away. Is this a bug, or does it have something to do with the specific planet?

How many colonists did you send to the planet.
Population plays a major role in determining approval.
If the planet is extremely over populated then even adding entertainment network will not help.

The reason other colonies might have bounced back is because the population you colonized with was less.

Thanks, JavaScout. Duh, next dumb question: I have control (or information?) about the number of colonists? I thought you just built a colony ship and it went with a fixed amount; I was never asked how many people I wanted on board. What gives?

PS: I love this game, but on my third game, I'm just beginning to realize how deep it really is. ;p

With planets which are building colony ships DO NOT cross the box for auto-launch. If they auto-launch they usually take half of the planet's population.

When the colony ship is built, click on the image of the ship at the bottom right corner and a screen will come up with a slider for the number of colonists you want to put in the ship. If your mouse has a wheel, you can use that as well.

OK, thanks again! Next dumb question (I know, it's tough dealing with a newbie, but that's where I am right now...sorry 'bout that!): how do you know how many to take?

Perhaps along the same line, I hope, does the "size" of the planet have any meaning? I'm not referring to the number (15 or 16 or whatever) but the actual size of the planet(s) compared to others in orbit around that sun. Some can be significantly larger than others, but have the same number, or even a lower number. Can't figure this one out.

And...occasionally a newly colonized planet will report "no resources" on that first turn. But next turn it has started building. What am I missing here???

THANKS!!!

Jellis2, from one newbie to the next (the blind leading the blind :) ):

I don't believe the physical appearence has any bearing. Only the Planet Quality (PQ) number is relevant, the higher the better.

I've not noticed this, however if a poor PQ planet is settled (<15 I think) income from PQ is zero and maybe it takes a month to get the population income going. Will need to check this.

JayThomas, thanks. I've settled about 12 or so PQ14's over the course of 2-1/2 games. Some do very well right from the start, others don't. I'm missing a factor or six here, but I really don't know where to start looking. Raw population count might impact some things...but which? :notsure:

The number of people I use to start a colony depends on how many people I have available for colonization. Early on in the game, I may start colonies with only 250 million; later in the game, it is not unusualy to load up colony ships with 750 million or even 1 billion.
