Blockade?

In strat threads I saw references to blockading a resource and to blockading a minor (to preserve the minor against attacks by a major). OK, sounds good, but how do you DO that? Just put ships in all eight adjacent spots? -- HtL

Yes, all you need to do is surrond the planet/resource with cheap ships so the other races can't get to it without attacking you first.

You are correct, Hermann. A blocade is as simple as putting ships in all eight adjacent spaces. It is effective for preventing another player from getting a particular resource or system.

Intresting how there are two posts at about the same time.

Scouts are particularly good for this purpose. Note that you must have peaceful relations for it to work. Otherwise they'll just smack em. It is particularly effective when you wish to keep a minor alive in your territory rather than have an alien get em on Maso.

Just curious but wouldn't the sensor drones be better for blockade since they have zero maintenance and scouts have 1bc/turn?

Or use your scouts to scout and then build the quantity of zero maint ships like sensors or freighters to total 8 or 16 or whatever?

On 1.05 constructors have zero maint but on 1.10 they have 1bc/turn.

I have never done a blockade but on maso I am learning to be frugal. LOL

Scouts are quicker. Drones are ok for a blockade close, but if you need to cover a bit of ground to get there, the scouts are better. And usually, by the time I discover I need the blockade, I'm pressed for time. HEHE. Again, I only use them to block minors the aliens could use as a culture bomb.

Yes, preserving a minor was what I had in mind. This is the "third minor" and they popped up right in the same sector as Sol (so speed was not of the essence). I was thinking that defense might increase the deterrent value of the blockade, so I pumped out a bunch of defenders supplemented by a couple of BC that raced over from nearby stars once the friendly Drengin declared war on the minor.

Nope, all that matters is that the Dregin aren't at war with YOU so they don't attack your blockade :)

Yeah, but then you can't trade with them.

nah -- the diplo bonus for trading with a major is way to good to pass on. I never trade with minors anymore *wink*
