The GalCiv Devotion Index

And now the latest from the Drengin Bureau of Statistics: The GalCiv Devotion Index.
I have given each player a rating based on the size and difficulty they've played in their last five games, as well as how often they submit. The full formula will come later for those who are interested, but right now we'll get right down to the numbers! (They only cover the top 25 right now, until people show interest in this and I feel like crunching the numbers again :P)

Cotal -- 196.0
Ray the Wanderer -- 22.6
Jon50 -- 17.9
Jeff Desilva -- 10.3
Hurley -- 7.7
Jaws the Wayfarer -- 6.4
TJL1 -- 6.2
TheoLeo -- 6.0
vincible -- 5.8
Killa Koala -- 4.9
Qui-Gon Jinn -- 3.9
The NewfyScotian -- 3.7
Staffa -- 3.4
Solitair -- 3.2
established -- 2.7
kryofx -- 2.5
ricbayer -- 2.3
Mauler28 -- 2.2
arobertson -- 1.9
Wild Wombat -- 1.9
Chiacow -- 1.6
Base Delta Zero -- 1.5
Jimmy Chung -- 1.4
PontiusBruinPilot -- 1.2
EBZeroMatrix -- 0.1

[some indices, particularly Staffa's and EBZ's, are skewed due to recent inactivity]

To say the least, Cotal is very devoted to GalCiv (two gigantic/masos per day!) as shown by her ridiculously high index!

OK, now for the how and the why. These number are only a rough estimate of how much time and effort each player spends on GalCiv, based on the assumption that larger maps and higher difficulties take longer and thus require more devotion to play ;). If you're really interested, here's the full breakdown:

First, I recorded the width (in sectors) of each of the five most recent games from each player. That is, Tiny is 4, Small is 5, Medium is 8, Large is 12, Huge is 16, and Gigantic is 24/28 (depending on version). I then averaged the size.

I then recorded the date that the first of the five most recent games was submitted, and figured the number of days between now and then.

Once that is done, I calculated a number representing each player's activity by taking the square of the average map width (to determine how many sectors they normally play) by the number of days it has taken to submit the past five games.

Finally, I took the activity rating and multiplied it by each player's personal toughness rating (divided by ten so as not to produce such huge numbers!) using the Gerraken™ Toughness Rating scale.

Whew! Well, That's it for now. The information probably isn't really useful to anyone but it is at the very least interesting--so have fun mocking others who are less devoted than you are, or mocking those who have no life but GalCiv, whatever suits your taste ;)

(Disclaimer: these number are almost totally arbitrary and may have absolutely nothing to do with how much time you actually spend on GalCiv.. but that's not my problem! :P)

interesting,

I think Stardock has created a new bot called Cotal and she is eating the old Raybot for lunch.

Good stuff kryo,

I feel like David in the A.I. movie who steps into android factory and sees all these new Cotal models. :)

If you are measuring devotion or dedication, I don't think you should include game toughness.

A player can be very devotedly playing at the lower levels.

Actually it has little effect for these since only a couple of the top 25 players play below crippling. I'll probably tweak the formula a bit though if I do more, but again it isn't so much a measure of how 'dedicated' the player is as it is how much time they devote to GalCiv (operating on the premise that harder games take longer to play--you have to think a lot more instead of just setting things up and clicking through to victory). Besides, map size and frequency of submission have a *lot* more influence on the player's rating than difficulty.

Splitting hairs, I know, but that's what I set out to find ;)

But TJL1, who actually plays on a lower difficulty than you, is higher (than me too!) because he playes big maps... like I said, difficulty is a factor, but only a fairly small factor ;)

Note that without difficulty adjustement, this rating is simply map size vs. submission frequency :P
