What does retiring do?

It essentially lets you lose the game now so you can see the end-game stats, instead of having to wait for the AI to hand you your rear on a silver platter before doing so. LOL

It also might work if for some reason you get an anomalous score and have lots of saved games. Go back to a saved game, load it, and retire. If you see 0 mpts, then you know you tripped a flag and that score is anomalous. If there are mpts upon retirement, then the game might still be good to finish and avoid an anomalous score. This tip courtesy of Ray the Wanderer reposted by me.

It allows you to submit a game if you don't want to continue the game. Since submitting a game is no more useful as far as ai tweaking is concerned, it's only worth points, so it's very much like submitting a loss.
You could try to abuse the system by submitting tiny maso rare games and see what this does to your score.

Oh, and obsidion, if you don't submit an evil game by sunday evening, I'm afraid you'll be booted out of the evil empire.

Damn straight. We set a strict policy and we're going to stand by it. This is a warning to all the 'undetermined' group of three that have recently joined our empire: Submit at least one game by sunday to join the metaverse and be EVIL, not neccesarily evil evil but diet evil will work (that was for you diets out there, I'm looking att you Fulgrymm and Nand1 and Hairy). You're on a deadline there Obsidion. On Sunday night, by my discretion, you and the others will be kicked. You won't be banned but until you have submitted a score and be evil you will not be allowed in 'first evil-only empire'. To which I refer to the great almighty EVIL EMPIRE.
