Galciv Game of the Month

Galciv Game of the Month

I am toying with the idea of reviving the Galciv GOTM, if there is sufficient interest. How many people think they would participate?

I would probably make two games. One would be maso and designed to be a challenge for even the most hardcore players. The other would be for the non-Masochistic and would have AI at, say, bright. Afterward, people could discuss how they responded to the challenges posed by the game, and hopefully learn from each other.

I haven't thought too much about scoring yet, but it would probably be primarily based on how long it took to attain victory.

So, are people interested?

given the ctrl-n hotkey and the cheat keys, you'd think a pretty good scenario could be made with all those clone ships, battleships, teleports, and all research tech options. conquer the proper planets then give them to the appropriate empires. would be annoying to make (especially if you win by accident).

Okay folks, I'll put together something after 1.11 comes out.

I suggest that the scoring will be:

t = number of turns the win took
f = fraction of the galaxy's yellow/purple star systems controlled by human at time of victory

score = f/t * 10,000

comments? This system is intended to give players an incentive to become a dominant power, so that you're penalized for getting a quick alliance win if you are outclassed by all the AIs. But depending on the time involved, a really quick alliance win might end up being better than a long, drawn-out military campaign, and it would be up to the player to judge this.

The other system I considered was a simple, straightforward race to victory, fastest victory of any type wins.

I'm open to suggestions.

Starting picks would probably be fairly neutral--things like PQ and econ which are useful to everyone. I wouldn't put more than three points into any one ability, so as to avoid favoring any particular style of play.

Looks like a good scoring system. What difficulty do you suggest?

Nand1, I disagree, in one of the GotM we did, one system was very contested during initial expansion. Some went to war over it, some got it and some didn't. This made for interesting comparions, as the strategies would vary because of that. I went at war against the Altarians for instance, only to have the Arceans land on the planet first!

I'm not saying that every game should start later in the game, I'm just saying that some of them should start in the middle. Some games would end up having very intense starting sequences and they would be left the same, and others would be started in the middle, using techniques like russellmz2 described.

Not sure that I care about 'scoring' in the sense you mean it, but go ahead. I think the interest is in the discussion. Those who choose military alpha striking will probably win more quickly than the influence players. The point about initial picks is that most of us have our favourite systems - not sure how that will work out but cannot see a better way than the one you describe.

I like the f/t scoring system. Not so much for the scoring itself, but like Wombat says - to compare tactics for fast wins etc.

Not sure what to do about picks as everyone has their own preferences. I would suggest lots of different 1 ow 2 point race picks - so that we get small advantages across the board, rather than a massive bonus in one area. Also deliberately leave a couple of areas "unpicked" (eg social and military production) and then select a corresponding party to make up for it (the social/mil bonus one - can't remember the name).
So you get 10% bonus in diplo, research, production, influence etc. rather than 80% bonus in one area.

As I would like to see more story-themed games, this is an example of something that I think would be fun to play:

Civ Name: Carekeepers
Picks: PQ and Morale
Party: Pacifists
Start out in the middle of the game. All other races have more planets than the carekeepers, but the carekeepers should have higher PQ for all of their planets.

I'll have the games out next week.

I've been waiting for 1.11. I'll be travelling this weekend though, so nothing until Monday at the earliest (and realistically, probably later).

Count me in. I'm finishing up a game (woo hoo), after which I'll be upgrading to 1.11. Comparing after-action reports with Ray (and seeing by how many orders of magnitude he demolished my performance) should be good practice for when he becomes a minor race in a future upgrade!

I was going to do the GOTM, then I saw the Jedi nipping at our heels and decided I needed to submit something. So you'll have to wait.

If anyone out there wants a GOTM, then they should join the Fellowship so that I can have some leisure time!
