Anyone else notice this?

The AI has a tendency to build useless ships once engaged in a prolonged war. In my current game (Crippling) I'm at war with the Torians. Even though they have Avatar level tech they are now throwing Corvettes at me in large numbers. Those ships are getting slaughtered by my Dreadnoughts/Rangers. I saw this same tendency in my last game on Painful too.

Perhaps they have so few available, they judge it better just to get something in the air if they dont have time to build "good" ships?

It probably depends on planet quality. Some games I've played yes this happened, but when I invaded and won you'll see that they don't have really good manufactoring base set up yet.On their better worlds you will find that they produce better ships.

Sounds to me they are trying to stall you while they build some bigger ships.

Thats what the AI players try with me. It seems after you wear down their 'frontline' ships they resort to building quickly built ships. Meanwhile they are researching new techs that'll help out (like a better ship) and producing bigger ships at a few locations depending on their size.

I agree with y'all. this last battle I took three planets in 1 turn. two were building excaliburs (1 turn left on 1 wowo) and one was building a vette.

OK, I did see another Avatar show up last turn. However in general I think throwing away resources on ships that stand no chance is a bad plan. Perhaps some code could be added that has the AI check opposing ship tech levels and not build anything more than one level lower. Probably not that simple but the current method is a turkey shoot.

If you are lucky enough to be on the winning side. However I have found that building relatively useless ships (vs their powerful ships i.e. a Battlecruiser against a Dreadnought) on my lower production planets is a good tactic to ward off any major advance for my opponents. I take one excellent PQ planet and build a Manufact. Capital and Hypion Manufact Center there so that my production increases two-fold. That particular planet produces my best ships quickly and efficently.
I have also taking a shining to taking out the more effective minor races, i.e. the Alexians, who seem to always have excellent manufacturing district. They normally have decent planets with a good manufacturing output allowing my production to soar.

Lately I've been having troubles with the increase in AI intelligent. So I've been more on the defense rather than on the offense like I want to be. So slowing down enemies is a good way to last long enough to mount a successful counterattack.

On another note: The EVIL EMPIRE is looking for good recruits. You fit the profile nicely, sir elmo3. It would be a pleasure (or is that hateful?) either way we would like to have you join us. But thats up to you LOL
