Bug report thread v1.11.078

Might as well get things rolling for the newest patch. And to start things off, it seems that the AI is not bound to the new starbase rules--in my first 1.11 game I found that the Drengins had constructed a group of starbases, with two of them closer than the new rules allow (one was a tile to the right and two above the other--a position that the rules prohibited me from duplicating).

kyro: do you happen to have a screenshot or a save game to show this? Could they consisently do that?  Was one of the starbases on a resource?

Richard Rahl: Check your options and make sure that User Defined PlayList is turned off, and that Music and SFX are on.  If all of that is fine, run dxdiag and e-mail the report to me at [email protected]. Also, you have good taste in reading material. :)

Sirian: did you try re-installing Stardock Central? Sometimes installing other programs can mess up some of the dlls that Stardock Central uses. I had to re-install SDC after installing a demo for Jasc PaintShop Pro8.

We do know about the invisible ship bug. We think that it's caused by a bug in the data manager, which is in the very core of our code library. Fixing the bug would affect all of the major systems in the game, and I'd have to write code to convert all of our graphics because they'd crash the game under the fix otherwise. And then, to see if this did fix the problem, I'd have to play for 3-4 hours to wait for it to happen.  This could take a week at best to fix. That's a week that I could be spending working on other bugs that cause crashes, or things that you can't work around by reloading Gal Civ, or on Gal Civ 2 where this won't even be an issue because we won't be using 2D graphics for the starmap. Even setting aside the fact that it's a pain, that it's taking time away from other things, that's a week that Stardock is paying me to do something that isn't going to return anything for us.  If it was something that would be an issue in Gal Civ 2, I would work on it. But hey, maybe I should make another poll.  How many of you would pay for an expansion pack that fixes this bug and a few cosmetic details?

I'll look into the starbase bugs. FoulFoot: it would probably be helpful if you could e-mail the save game to me. I'll need both the .sav file and the folder with the same name.

Here are instructions for WinDVD and Gal Civ co-exsiting

"Just delete the two *.ax files in the InterVideo\WinDVD directory if you want. Back them up if you wish. Or even better yet just rename them. Try playing an MPEG file then. Everything should work as it once did (you may have to reboot once for it to take effect) . Those two files are DirectShow filters which allow Windows Media Player to play mpeg2 or vob files but they are buggy as hell. Renaming them or (unregistering them if you know how to do it) is the best way. These two files will not affect the WinDVD player at all."

To unregister a file, go to a command prompt and navigate to the directory where the file is located. Then enter

regsvr32 /u filename.ext

Cari, a screenshot showing that particular instance of illegal starbases is en-route to your email right now. I think I saw some elsewhere but I cannot recall which game it was (and I only keep one save of each game so they may not even exist at the point it is saved at) so I cannot get a screenshot of more of them unless I run into more next time I play. If I do I'll get another screenie for you if you want.

In my game the Drengins have 2 SB's (both only the base, no resource or anything) within a distance of only 2 parsecs: Like that: * *

Shall they not underly the same rules that I do?

game load bug
I have noticed that often an AI will develop a trade good or wonder or whatever imediately on loading a game. Recently I saved a game before attacking. I was obliterated and reloaded the game. Bang, a Minor got aphrodesiac. I reloaded several times to be sure. I reloaded the auto-save from five minutes before and another minor got aphrodesiac.

Foulfoot,

Don't know why they don't give her an alias of carielf @ stardock.com...

The 1 IP issue is alive and well. I'm reporting this as a bug because Frogboy said it was fixed in this patch.

This is probably the most abused exploit in the game right now, far more than, say, starbase abuse. I really hope its fixed soon.

Cari, in WinDVD there are 5 .ax files. For the time being I have all renamed them.

AIL.ST: Yep, I'm looking into it.

Kyp Durron: use SDC to archive your files. Then, if you need to re-install, restore from the archive.

I just finished re-reading the entire series that's out to date in paperback (through the Pillars of Creation). I enjoy all of them. I don't really find it that annoying, as long as it's people separating them, not magic like in the Temple of Winds.  Although even that was primarily due to Darken Rahl.  People like Jagang and Shota will always try to separate/eliminate Richard and Kahlan because of the threat that they possess together.

And I just about died laughing when I read the devotion. :)

I could have an alias of [email protected]. I just never set one up. Also, when you click on my name, don't you get my e-mail address?

What 1 IP issue?

CariElf-- pretty sure he's referring to the fact that gifting 1 influence point to a major still has a significantly positive impact on relations, and can even be used repeated to stave off war until you're ready to culture bomb them into submission. Haven't tried it in 1.11 yet to see if it works, have used it occasionally in 1.10, and it's hard to resist when you know that the Drengin (for example) who are MUCH more powerful than you, are hostile to you.

Correct. Some people are giving these gifts every three turns. It's really abusive.

It's most effective with a high diplomacy rating.

We finally got our server transferred over from Atlanta to California. But we're having problems with...

So what is in 1.11? Well, I think there will be quite a bit of reaction about this and we may need to do some tweaks about here's what's in 1.11:

+ The 1ip bug is fixed...

More follows on first post

Ah, well that's not one of the things that I worked on for this build, so I'll have to ask Brad about it. Since we were both working on the trade screen, it's possible that CVS didn't merge the code properly.

And I'll have to keep in mind that my e-mail address doesn't show up. I usually remember to put it somewhere in a post, but I apparently forgot in that one post.

Ouch... yes, you've got a point here, I'm not naive to how a business runs, but who's to say people will want to buy GalCiv2 if that same attitude comes forward again? I've always thought well of StarDock because they support their games well after retail, so I was disapointed with this quote to be honest...

And as for paying for patches LOL StarDock didn't even get the 5,000 "minimum" YES! votes for the expansion pack you ARE considering, so maybe you should consider incorporating the invisible ship bug into this package, you might get more possitive feedback...

I'm not saying that we're not going to continue to support Gal Civ.  I am saying that we have to prioritize bug fixes.  Right now, there are just under 500 bugs on the list that I keep to track bugs, although some of those have probably been fixed and I haven't removed them from the list yet.  Most of them are pretty minor.  When I sit down to fix bugs in Gal Civ, I try to pick the ones that interfere with the game the most.  Also, the week that it would take to fix this bug is a week that I could be spending fixing a bunch of other bugs.

Granted, the invisible ship bugs is interfering.  But after 3-4 hours of straight gameplay that it takes to cause the bug, it's about time to get up and stretch your limbs anyway.

I was a bit harsh yesterday.  But I'm only human, contrary to the beliefs of some of the people on this forum. :)

Hera has nothing on you, CariElf. You are second only to Zeusboy...er...Frogzeus...er...ZeusBrad. Ummm...anyway, he still pays the bills, so I guess Brad's still Zeus, but you're the BOMB! :D

I think I know what did it. I was playing tiny/rare/intelligent. I had Earth plus one other decent planet. I was taking technologists with max research and diplomacy. I was researching techs and trading them for lots of cash, going over 25000 rather quickly.

As im a bit new here , what does this mean ?? yes , tiny/rare/intelligent , got that bit (map / planets / AI level) , but the rest? i have been playing without any mods, now it would appear that you can get penalised on your playing style? i have built my little brain up to be able to play and win at 'challenging' (dont laugh) ,now your telling me thats it not just having mods that disqualify your scores on the metaverse but your playing style? can someone please explain , im really confused , i wanted to have a go at submitting a score this weekend , ive looked all over and the metaverse rukes dont tell me anything , help ?

Not sure if this event bug has been reported or not? I got the event about my ambassador insulting the mistress of an emperor, or whaever, due to a lack of espionage funding. Not sure of the exact wording. Thing is that I had spent 2296 bc on espionage with that race to date and was spending 15 bc per month at the time.

Darkspire: Basically, you need to avoid getting too much money early in the game. Also, if the Planet Quality gets too high in your games (too many planets at, say, 50PQ) it will trigger a flag. You shouldn't have to worry about anything if you don't use mods. Just keep spending your treasury, making sure you don't get large amounts of money built up. I try to keep around 5,000 BC in my treasury.

Good luck on your submissions, and if you feel like joining an empire, consider the Fellowship of the Ring. Visit this http://www.angelfire.com/rings/fellowshipgalciv to find out more! :)
