Clean Data Files can Clear up crashes for German version, mods

This is a link to files that you can use to make sure that your german version will run correctly with the update.  Put the .mdl files in your gfx directory and the other files in your data directory.  The data files are in english.  If anyone wants to provide me with a link for a german version that doesn't crash, I'll make that available too.

Also, if anyone wants a full set of the unmodified english data files, here are some more links.  The first one is before the latest patch.  The second is with the latest patch.

shhh.
i really wish i would have bought the english version ....

but the german one did only cost 20€, while the english costs 40€....

but now i cannot play with 1.1+ versions.
even with this "clean data" every game crashes sooner or later at the same round.

since it seems it has to do with anomalies, can i somehow just delete some files to prevent the game from using the new anomalies??

i even found out alone what caused the crash!(at least in some way...)
i just deleted every "*.anomaly" file and tried the game for an hour.... :-]

when i came to Expansion01Anom.anomaly the game crashed no more....
but now i can finally see the monster-event appear!

damn you! bringing me to play Galciv even more... ;-]

thx.

Indeed...even with clean data....the game still chrashes!
I try it out what Therlun has done.
But b4 I do that....can U reply me for this question?:
when u delete the *.anomaly files...can u see ALL items on the game? (monsters, anomalies, junk, etc etc)
Or is there any difference..in appearance?
I hope not.....if its still originall...I use that one:)

I think I must have German files Carielf!
The one I downloaded are in English...and those files are EXAXLTY the same as on the original. No wonder it hasnt helped:(

the Expansion01Anom.anomaly file includes only one event. (monsters)

i dont know if it completely removes the crashes, but it at least reduced it in my testings.
i did not play a whole game yet though....

yes, i also wondered why most files r the same (even with the exact same date...) but i think there r two files in the "clean data package" that were different, and one in this monster package.

CariElf could u tell us what exactly does cause this crashes??
the only differenc i see is that in the enlgish *.ship file the line:
>>> Tech_Requirement "ImpossibleTech">> Tech_Requirement_ID 999 <<<

If you delete all of the .anomaly files, you won't get any anomalies in the game.  I think that the galaxy creation code is smart enough to not create the anomaly images if it doesn't find any of the data files, but if it's not, weird things could happen.

I'm not sure why that one line would make the difference, unless your GCtech file doesn't have the impossible tech entry in it.  In this file there should be a gctech.tech file.

i did not delete all anomaly files, i did delete them one-by-one (restored the old ones)

i just think i "donwtracked" the problem to "Expansion01Anom.anomaly", because when i run the game without it (but every other *.anomaly ) the game does not crash.
also with ur "monsters" file it seems solved, although i do not know why....

As I descibed in this thread (post #5 & #8)
http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=100087
for me the monster crashes went away only by replacing the german text files with the english ones.

QUOTE>>>>
[...] Ie. without changing monster.mdl. So probably the single reason is monster.ship.

The german version doesn't look corrupted, but rather modified.
(From memory, major difference:
Tech_Requirement_ID 999
replaced with
Tech_Requirement "impossible tech")

And there are more of such replacements.
ENDQUOTE>>>>

This other replacements may result in additional crashes ...

My knowledge in this case is too limited, to predict anything.

{edit}
Maybe during portation (to german language) this monster bug was accidently created and "solved" by patching the code to disable the whole monster event at all.
So some, who have known the game longer than me, called the monster event NEW!!! (from german 1.05 to patch 1.11)
And then the 1.11 patch code back-enabled the monster bug generated by the malicious monster.ship.

((( kind of a preprocessor substition ???Tech_Requirement "impossible tech" # Tech_Requirement_ID 999 )))

Well, tech 999 IS the impossible tech.  In another thread, I asked someone with the german version if they had that tech entry in their gctech file.  I think that the monster is the only thing that uses that tech, so if it wasn't there, that would explain the crash.

Hello All,

I too made the mistake of buying the German version. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I think it is still recognizing the English language patches even though I had completely uninstalled the game before reinstalling. Why is this so?

Also, the Stardock website does not recognize that the patches have been installed even though the game itself does. Does this make sense? It keeps asking me if I want to download the patches (the English language ones) even though I have already done so (andd subsequently deleted through deinstallation, hopefully).

Oh, I'm so confused!

BTW, thanks CariElf for your help. I have loaded up the Anomaly and Monster files. Let's see how much this helps me.

Um, I'm not sure how it would be still using files that should have been deleted when you un-installed, but I suppose that it would depend on how you un-installed it.  Maybe if you un-installed it through an un-installer that came with the CD, it didn't recognize the English files, so it left them.

You can use your serial number to download the entire english version if you would like.

I had the same problem with game crash when encounting a space monster, but I have the french version of the game... Changing the space monster file did it OK, but now I have detected another crash when
trying to attack another civilization : I am asked a confirmation that I wish to engage war, the senate is asked to vote for, and then the game returns to windows.

So now I can play, but cannot declare war upon others (it doesn't happen when others declare war to me).
Please help !!!

[Sorry for non-french speakers; I was just telling Fracasse that I don't think his problem has to do with soundcards, and asking about news of Nobilis (the distributor in France]

Fracasse: if you have not tried to replace your monster.ship file with the one provided in the monster.zip file, please try that.

Maucourant Francois: it sounds like there is something wrong with your political parties. We are still waiting for a French copy.  If you will zip up your entire data folder and send it to me (including your save games) I will see if I can figure out what the problem is.
