Tech Limits

I'm enjoying the game (even on maso, now, thanks to Ray and all the others sharing their wisdom), but I feel a bit disappointed. I think the key (as a long-time SF reader) is a certain lack of imagination on the part of the game designers. For example, I took one look at the Nov.2003 issue of SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN and picked it up. Some "headlines:"
Strings & Spacetime with 11 Dimensions
(Kinda takes the wind out the sails of 4D Phasing...)
How to Move Asteroids
Aircraft with Morphing Wings
Genetics beyond Genes
Swarms of Small Robots
Anyway, what I find missing is something like phase changes, where there might be fundamental shifts in game play. Despite text promising dramatic changes, all the techs provide incremental improvement in abilities that you have from the beginning of the game. Examples might be the arrival of gunpowder or the arrival of airpower in Rise of Nations (et al). There just aren't any transforming techs in GalCiv.
