carrier doctrine

hii
i am currently modding some ships. (look in the mod forum for it).

now i thought about something:
i found the fighters pretty useless in the game.
sure they r cheap and all but IMO they r just useless fodder.

how about incresing their strenght by several points, but reducing their range (to one sector).
and then design a ship that can transport them (fighters enter it just the way ships enter systems)

- the fighters need a serious strenghten up, in RL fighters r build because they r effective, not because they r cheap (which they r compared to military ships)

- the "enter" system is already there.

- to show the new strenght of the fighters the model could incresed to a whole squadron (like i did... look in the mod forum, but enough self-advertisment for now ;-] )

- the AIs would need to learn how to use it.

- a way has to be found that their range stays at 0.
as far as i know even if it is set to 0 it will increase by research. (i wonder why) and its not possible anymore to set it below 0.

=> all in all it pretty much hardcoding.
but it could be a (IMO) nice feature of the buy-expansion.
and it would not need a complete redesign.

what do u think:

1. about the concept, and its impact on gameplay?
2. about the work for coding it ?
3. about my mods in the mod forum ? ;-]

That would be a nice feature. As long as I understand what you are saying: Have a battle group in which weak starfighters or corvettes can go. kinda like an aircraft carrier in the Navy.

That would be cool, that way instead of getting rid of you're useless ships they can still effect the outcome of a war.

Nice

To get this to accurately reflect a fighter "squadron," though, damage would have to reduce the attack and defense values of the unit. Regular warships can fight at full effectiveness with only one hit point left; fighters shouldn't have that benefit, as their "strength" comes from numbers.

I like the idea of a "carrier", perhaps similar to the Transport, for aircraft. Because the more aggressive ships take longer to build (generally), you'd have a choice of loading the "carrier" up with cheap disposables and heading out quickly to defend an area, or building more sturdy units and holding the carrier back until needed.

As to the coding, I dunno. Not a coder.

As to your contribs, I dunno, but I'll go check 'em out.

Thanks for your work!
