I suppose playing good is an aspect of default AI alignments.
The Drendin and Yor are really only dangerous if they get strong early in the game and can threaten or conquer other AIs. Typically, your alignment will be close to neutral by the time you can decide they don't threaten you. The Arceans also seem to expand fast, but rarely bother defending their planets, which means a good player with take them out -- or another AI will take them out.
This leaves the Altarians and Torians as the the major mid-to-late game threat. Worse, they'll likely to ally with each other. Your life gets harder if you're not good...
Unless, I'm MUCH stronger or I've neutralized the good AIS, I tend to play good on Maso.
