Zero Score - Now What?

Zero Score - Now What?

Well, that sucked. >:( I just got my first Zero score. Also my first tiny Maso (rare). I thought I should do at least one Tiny. Well, that may be all I ever do, if the game is going to deny me score credit for no apparent reason. SURE AS HECK WOULD BE NICE IF IT TOLD US WHY IT THINKS A RESULT IS OUT OF BOUNDS.

I have no idea why the game thought this was an anomalous game. I had one crash to desktop. I sold techs out the wazoo to both Cari and Alex, who were both buying. I stored up over 25k in cash by the late game, almost all of it minor cash. With only two planets, at first, then three after I took out the Yor, I just couldn't spend all the money I was raking in. (Could that have been it?) And I went about conquering. I conquered the Yor earlyish, with battle cruisers. For the first time ever, I even traded for ships. (Wow, Tiny/Rare with +60 diplo is more of a cakewalk than I imagined). Then I racked up some wonders, and did not go after the Arceans until I had battleships, and did not finish them until I had dreads. The other races were single planets. I paused to clean up a few more wonders, and then I finished it off. Zero points? Blah.

What can I do from here? Is there any way to tell why the game zeroed out the score for this one? The only thing I did differently than normal here was trading for AI ships. I don't usually do that, but I tried it. I traded for freighters, warships... even took the Yor's only battle cruiser for four techs and then beat them silly with their own ship. I didn't even hit ctrl-n or reload at any point. I took the first map it gave me, and would have played it all the way from start to finish in one session except the CTD forced me to reload from an autosave once.

With no way to determine why the score was zeroed, I have no way to know what to avoid, or whether or not I actually got ripped off. I'm feeling gunshy about Tiny maps now. Got bit on my first one on Maso. :( Not that I lost, far from that. This was the biggest cakewalk I've ever had on any difficulty level. But all I did was play, and the game has dissed my result. Blah.

Is there any sort of process whereby Stardock looks at anomalous results? Can I send the saved game somewhere? Not so much for credit, as to have them look at it to see what went wrong and if anything is needing to be fixed.

Here's how I avoid zero scores: I save every hour or two, and I "retire" without submitting the score. If I get a zero score, I know I triggered the "cheater" flag. If I do trigger it, I lost at most an hour of playing time.

Not worth my time.

A better way to avoid it is to avoid using diplo picks. They make the game too easy anyway. :) You can tell that I'm not lying when I say I have only very rarely used diplo bonuses, by the fact that I had 30 Maso games logged before I ran into this problem. :D

Seriously. If they nerf the diplo picks from 10/20/50/60 down to 10/20/30, that would just about do it. The cash cow flag is not going to be tripped without high diplo both to bring in more total techs from the majors to sell to the minors, and in squeezing a higher price out of the minors.

Fixing the minors to cap their purchasing at a max rate would also help. Say, minors not willing to spend more than 60BC per turn on a tiny map, 80BC/turn on a small map, 100BC on medium, 125BC on large, 150BC on huge and 200BC on gigantic. If the minors can't sell for 400BC per turn over 19 turns, player won't pick up 8k on the deal, and won't ever get to 20k. Instead, at 60BC per turn tops, player needs over 130 turns to pick up the same 8k. No more breaking of the bank.

What Stardock is actually going to do about this, we don't yet know, but they did pay attention to the thread and may be weighing their options. I sure do hope they move away from "Find the Alexians".

On the off-chance that Stardock is paying attention, I'm going to agree that diplo picks are by far the strongest and should either be nerfed or made more expensive. I think most top players agree on this--I've seen a whole lot of people make comments to this effect. Just don't overnerf!
