I still don't exactly get it

Hey folks. I was flipping through the threads on this forum for the first time in a little while, and I still have a question: What exactly does it mean when one empire goes to war with another? I took some flak for laughing about this a few months ago, so let me clarify - this is not intended as a flame.

I love GalCiv and other TBS games, so I'm pretty much just as much of a nerd as the next guy on here, but I still don't understand the whole Metaverse/fiction concept. When The Jedi Council goes to war against the European Alliance (from a thread I was just glancing through), what exactly does that do? I mean, don't you just still sit at home and play the game and submit your score? How does anything change? You can't affect anybody else's score positively or negatively, and nothing about GalCiv itself changes, so what exactly are you doing? How can you directly compete with anybody? What's the point? Doesn't raising your empire's score raise it relative to everybody else? Then you write fiction about "battles" that can't and don't happen? I'm just clueless.

basically, it's 'make believe' in the sense that it stirs the thread pot. however, it does galvanise players from 'warring' empires to play more games, as the direct competition in terms of league ladder status is 'declared' and subsequently intensifies. it's just harmless fun at the end of the day...

you can buy into it or ignore it. perhaps, given Stadocks ambitions for galciv and the meta, it may one day eventuate as something more cogent and real...

its basically called for when one empire comes close to the score of another empire. they then declare "war" on each other. think in the literal terms for a second. if two countries with oposing borders were peaceful, and then one or the countries got bigger. the other would feel threatened.
this is the literal term for a bit of fun in the threads and a call for the relevant empires players to submit a few more games to hopefully broaden the gap between the two empires.

I agree. There's absolutely no animosity between any of the players who are "at war". In fact, the banter between the two warring factions usually brings the players closer, as they chat about how their empire will defeat the other one. In my opinion, wars are nothing more than an excuse to talk more! LOL

And of course, role-play.

I resemble that remark. :)

:), I had a wacky gifted program teacher who used to say "I represent that remark!" when people commented on her wackiness. (instead of "I resent that remark!"
