Corrupted sound fix?

SOUND ISSUES FIX?
I've been getting terribly corrupted sound since well forever (I did everything suggested but nothing helped no weird codecs nothing overwriting). And I recently reinstalled galciv with the new patch. Suddendly it's all gone away. Now I don't see any mention of a sound fix in this patch release. HOWEVER I did have a problem with another program that needed me to change a registry setting.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Filesystem
NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation from 1 to 0
just before I reinstalled Galciv.
Maybe it's just a coincidence and I don't know what I'm talking about but I do know my sound went from screeching white noise buzzing and crackling to well music. Maybe some of the other people still having sound problems can try this and uninstall/reinstall and see if it helps?

Well, depending on what that registry key was supposed to do, I suppose that it is possible.

it's reg entry that controls long file names. It should be 1 by default. I have no idea what program changed it to 0.

But its a moot point now I had to reinstall XP and the sound is screwed up again and the reg entry is what it should be *SIGH*

Ugh. I can sympathize with you.  I had to re-install winxp on my laptop and I still haven't been able to get dvds to play.
