Stuck between turns

Hi,

I've been experiencing problems with GalCiv waiting between turns which make it pretty much unplayable - I've had one normal game, so I know how good it is, and I'm desperate to get it working consistently so I'd be grateful for any suggestions. When I press enter to end a turn, the clock face appears in place of the turn button, and nothing happens for quite a while - sometimes 5-10 minutes, sometimes hours. Reloading solves the problem for one turn only, and clicking through my planets, ships etc to check whether anything needs to be done doesn't make any difference. The only solution I've found is in one game where opening a diplomacy screen often started the next turn, but this hasn't worked since - can anyone suggest any other ideas?

This problem occurs with auto end turn on, with it turned off I get a similar problem where I can move my ships around but nothing else in the game happensfor extended periods of time - no AI movements, no research or production. I don't think it's my computer as it easily meets the requirements (Duron 1100, 320mb).

Cheers,

Version 1.10, but the same problem occurs without the patch. I've only tried playing in medium and large sized galaxies, there doesn't seem to be any difference. Generally speaking, the game runs very quickly - when a turn does end normally, it's only a few seconds before the next one begins. The problem is, 9 times out of 10 I'm left waiting for ages...

Do you have End Turn Skips Moves Left on or off?

I had a similar problem where the game would appear to be frozen, but if I watched closely, the graphics would sometimes move ahead...just a little. I had it set up so I could watch the comps move so I could keep track of them, and it would freeze up when they went to attack each other. I turned off the FX sounds and that seemed to end the freezing problem. Now it plays through like it should. Just need a good soundtrack now... ;)

I hit upon the same solution - turning off SF and music - which seemed to work for about a day, but now the problem's back again. The same thing happens with End turn skips moves on or off, and with the various watching options on or off. I just can't figure out what's doing it.

When it cleans because you click on a planet, it's because there was a planet event and you didn't hit done, which clears the event.

I think that even if you turn off your sound and music, it still initializes the sound system because you might still turn it on, so it could still be the sound system's fault.  Try upgrading your sound drivers. Also, do you have WinDVD or Winamp3 installed?  I haven't received any bug reports related to Winamp5 yet.

I don't have WinDVD or Winamp3 - it's quite possibly the sound card itself. I'll try with the card switched off (it's a useless onboard one), see if that does it...

I've actually seen that problem in the 1.13 patch where I would hit enter frequently to go through turns quickly; sometimes the TURN button turns into the clock and will not respond to enter keypresses anymore. Clicking on the button works wonderfully, however. It's just a chore :)
