My gripe is that Maso scores are too depressing.

Realms Beyond Empire have two Maso players who can easily beat our 17 Normal players.
The same with Empire of Light.

I can see no point in competing.
So I am quitting the Masoverse. >:(

Don't player hate... appriciate.

But seriously... yeah that sucks. You should join the Jedi Republic. Then atleast you can be in a 5th palce empire. ;) (JOKING)

A) RB has six Maso players and growing.

B) The two top-12 players only account for about half our points, so we'd be far behind without the contributions of ALL of our players, which are much appreciated! :)

C) We encourage our players to have fun first, embrace challenges second, and obey our rules third. Scoring isn't in the top five RB concerns. :)

D) Maso is a LOT harder to beat. Why SHOULDN'T it score significantly more? Why SHOULD you be able to play at a significantly lower difficulty level and "compete"? You can compete by moving up to Maso, or you can have fun at whatever level you enjoy and not obsess over the scoring.

E) Players can make important contributions to their empires, regardless of skill level. In a close fight, every point counts. What would you rather see? Maso not being worth playing because people can score more by playing a bunch of one-hour Beginner games than they can by taking on the hardest challenges? (Used to be that way, I understand). Bah to that.

F) Just calling it the "Masoverse" is sour grapes. Do minor leaguers and amateurs in any sport complain about not being able to "compete" with the pros? No. You have to play at the same level, by the same rules, if you want to "compete" with the elite. That only makes sense. However, an Empire in the Metaverse CAN compete with enough numbers. Just that 17 with few or zero Maso players does not beat 18 with six Maso players and more working their way up.

Believe me, RB will have more Maso players within the month. We are hardened veterans of stiff competition and we hunger. What's wrong with GalCiv offering rewards to the boldest players?

I can see no point in competing. So I am quitting the Masoverse.

I'm sorry you believe you are getting an unfair shake, but I don't see it that way. It's too bad the scoring has overtaken your enjoyment of the game. That is not the case for me. I could be milking the scoring with all conquest all the time, shutting off cultural victory condition, always picking the best bonus abilities, etc etc. Bah to that, too. :)

Best Wishes,

hehe nice post MM77.

Sirian, as for me I tried maso but get my butt kicked so I've hit the Crippling difficulty wall and trying to improve myself there hoping to tackle Maso within the next month or so, depending on how much time I get to play.

I was merely expressing my opinion and reason for quitting.
I don't understand why you launched such a virulent attack on me.

That's the point.

Marquesa,

I have known Sirian for a few years now, and never have I known him to launch into "virulent attacks" without provocation. And right now, he's not attacking you. He's just bringing up some valid points as to WHY things are the way they are.

I dunno about you, but I got my copy of Gal Civ to PLAY rather than to increase an integer on some remote server somewhere :). Playing and having fun is my primary concern, and the second I stop having fun I'll find something better to do with my time. So the real question is this: Have you been playing Gal Civ for fun, or for the scoring system?

Your point is false. They're called difficulty levels.

In baseball, there are peewee leagues that are geared for the youngest of school-age children, little leagues for older children, advanced leagues for children of secondary school age, adult leagues for amateurs, college organizations, and in the USA at least, about five grades of professional baseball. Why are there so many categories and leagues and levels? To group players of similar ability. Why is that important? Because if players of vastly different ability are grouped, the competition becomes a foregone conclusion. That is not good for gaming.

Would GalCiv be better off separating players by difficulty level? Probably not. There aren't enough Metaverse players to support dividing them up. There are less than two dozen empires with over a dozen members. Yet the game chooses to recognize the difference in performance based on difficulty level, map size, etc.

There are even a comparable number of gradations: ten in GalCiv, and about ten major groupings in baseball. In both cases, THE RULES OF THE GAME CHANGE to adapt to the skill levels of the players involved.

I don't understand why you launched an attack against the Metaverse, against Realms Beyond, and against Maso players in general. Only you get to express opinions? Speech doesn't work that way. Your views are opinions but mine are a virulent attack? That's not clear thinking, my lady.

The label Masoverse is derogatory. I don't take kindly to it, because it implies that Maso players (like me) are getting a free ride and somehow spoiling your fun. I don't buy it.

Perhaps you should re-examine your remarks and take responsibility for being provocative. There is cause and effect between what you chose to say and my reply. I welcome your comments, but if I do not agree with them, I may choose to rebut them with another view.

Sounds fair enough to me. Until recently, I've been playing on relatively easy levels, but understand that if I want to score better, I'll have to learn to play the game better on harder levels! :p Why play on Maso level if you can score the same or similar on Normal?

The only gripe I have is in the amount of "cheese" that can be used and abused to score in general on any level, but all games suffer from that sort of thing I guess!
She made no such attack Sirian. All I saw was her stating that you and the Empire of Light have consistent Maso submitting players and thus lost the desire to compete. Explain this "attack" you got out of that statement, I seem to have missed it.

Because bleeding from the ears is fun!

I found that my enjoyment of the game increased with the difficulty levels, but that's just me--and that's the beauty of the game. Play it as you like it; the Metaverse is just a sidebar. Hell, I've stuck to pretty much Tiny maps due to time constraints and a flaky attention span--not gonna be pegging 60K anytime soon. Big deal.
