missing tribute exploit in 1.13?

I traded techs to a minor for cash over many turns, then squashed him like the terrorist grinch he was (hehe). Didn't get the cash. I tested a couple of times. If I trade cash over several turns for a tech, then grinchify him, I don't have to pay after the first turn.

Isn't this a change from earlier versions? Or am I the moron my wife insists I am?

I knew about the not getting paid part, which makes sense, but my experience so far indicates you still have to pay your tribute after you kill a civ, which would also make sense. However, I did not check on that carefully since version 1.13, maybe I should have a look.

I just tested it and a paid tribute does indeeed disappear if your tributee is eliminated. That is too easily abusable, it should be like it was before. That is a paid tribute should run it's course even if the tributee disappears.

Agh, bump. Agree. If diplomacy is in the game, it needs to work, not be something so loaded with self-imposed rules I need to consult a list.

Hmm, starbase 3-space limit has been removed as well. I don't think I have seen this mentioned in the list of changes.

But if you stomp the civ, who are you paying the tribute to? I thnk the rule needs to be the same for both scenarios. If you don't get paid after stomping a civ, you shouldn't have to pay either.

You are paying the tribute to the United Planets. Leaving the paid tribute out only leads to abuse. By the same logic, to continue getting paid after wiping out a civ would lead to abuse and is best left like it is.

I haven't played recently so I can't be certain, but back in 1.11 I encountered several instances where the AI did not obey that rule... Cari was working on it last I knew, so maybe they decided to take it out until they can make the AI play by the rule too?

I could swear that it does; maybe I'm just well-trained by 1.12. I don't think the 3-space limit applies across sector boundaries, though.

While I agree with the "abuse" part, I don't know that I care for the logic of the "UP" explanation. I'd rather it was a straightforward anti-abuse game rule issue. The idea of an after-the-fact, unvoted, pay-the-UP-just-because-you're-human tribute really borks up my role-playing, man. :sniff!:

I also have never seen the 3 space limit to starbase construction extend across sector boundaries.

You pay the tribute to the UP after the other Civ is dead, but the UP doesn't keep up the payments of dead Civs. Makes logical sense to me, if that's what you want. :)

I mean, you can stack the starbases as close as you like with in a sector. At least in my game you can *grin*
