Did you get a new dictionary, too? ;)

Crack makes people stupid. And as much harm as it does to the brain chemistry, folks have to be dumb in the first place to be using it, so it's like a stupidity enhancement pill. I'm not sure that fits GalCiv.

I'd say GalCiv is more like a good restaurant: lots of flavors on the menu, and so good you just keep coming back for more. We even have a nice hostess checking on the customers regularly, taking feedback, and making adjustments to the recipes. :D

Digital pizza! Pizzeria style, with fresh mushrooms, hand-tossed crust, just the right amount of garlic powder...

If somebody spent that much dough on an X-box for you, though, I hope you get your value out of it. :)

I actually think GalCiv's is more like beer; you know you can't stop after just 1 hour, still you start a game and before you know it, its very late and you are busted the next day.

Then does one learn from this ?...no no no...thats right the next day you do the same thing all over

What a fine analogy this is! Well said. And just like food in a fine restaurant, with GalCiv, you just have to have one more bite...

Yes, and sometimes it's so good, you just eat too much, and don't feel that good after. Just like galciv when you just play, and notice that 5 minutes after (or so it seems) it's 4am and you have to get up at 7 to go to work :sniff!:

I was more refering to its so called addictive qualities not the fact that drugs make you wonky :D

I like the X-Box, its IMO the best console on the market at the moment and i must admit Rockstar games (Grand Theft Auto) did make make me smile with thier little snub at Sony (Sony had a deal with the release of games on the PS2) they made the X-Box version so much better than the other version (added polygon count, reflections, lighting, custom soundtracks etc) its more a games machine and not a home entertainment unit (and it doesnt screwup your DVD's like the PS2 has a bad reputation for)

Im right in the middle of a huge dreadnought war with the Drengin at the moment, no military resources found (both sides) so were near even on weapons (them 124% and me 128%) all the other AI races are dead and the minors are quaking in thier boots :D

My fave all time top 4X games LOL

M.U.L.E (1985 ish) - Atari 800 XL / 1300 XE
Reach For The Stars (1988 ish) - Amiga 500
STARS (pass) - PC
Master Of Orion II (pass) - PC
Birth Of The Federation (2000 ish) - PC
GalCiv (2003)

Anyone else got a list? :D

Master of Orion 2 is 1996 ish I think, because of the extremely low requirements and the OS it used (DOS). Surprisingly, it actually works with WinXP.

Your the first person ive ever heard to say the MOO2 works on XP without a lot of problems, either your very lucky in your system hardware or you know your systems well ;) But on looking in my box'o'bits theres two versions kicking about, a DOS version and a windows version, i must admit i didnt care much for the colony management but the starship combat was very well done, easy to manage with loads of strategy options, shame the rest, although very good, was really 'fiddly'.

darkspire > you forgot Master of Magic :D

sorry for the silly question, but how do you read "4X" ? (that's turn based, ins't it ?) "four ex" ?

do you have a link for Birth of Federation ? it's Microprose, I found Atari support for it, but no screenshots or the offical site

I would hardly qualify M.U.L.E of being a 4X game but I agree it is one of the best game of all time. Actually, it is one of the few computer software I really consider to be a "game". Everything else is pretty much a computer adaptation of a board game, a novel or a movie.

From the same era, you could also name Archon, an interesting variation on chess. Both would run on a commodore 64 and I know someone who installed a c-64 emulator on his top of the line pc just so he could play these 2 games from time to time. :)

lhetre:
Master Of Magic is a roleplay / city builder game , it doesnt get listed under 4X ... oh yes 4X :)

eXplore
eXpand
eXploit
eXterminate

A link for an intresting review , i know the review tends to say its a bit awkward in some areas but you have to play it to make your own judgement :D http://www.strategy-gaming.com/reviews/star_trek_birth_of_the_federation/index.shtml
multiple GUI screens dependant on which race your playing, five AI races, minor races ... LOL sound in anyway familiar??

JaxomCA:

Archon (looking in my box'o'bits) was by Epyx, it was also on the Atari 800 / 1300, yes a good game , Archon II was not as good, but both were as close as you could get to the chess game on Star Wars LOL but like i said to lhetre, its not a 4X game, and in that respect M.U.L.E might be considered as otherwise but everywhere i hear mention of it as the great granpappy of 4X , so i had to include it :D

mmm ... the article describes BOTF as a "franchise casualty", Star Wars made a franchise 4x game, tried to play it a little, but it was essentially void of interest , (I'm not such a great fan of SW after all)

"eXplore eXpand eXploit eXterminate" ok, nothing to do with strategy strictly speaking, or turn based then

Pax Imperia (1997) took some of my time :)

Lhetre: As i said, BOTF is a great game, the combat has a lot more to do than the reviewer had worked out, yes the tech tree is non branching but the way it is done involves much juggling for the funding, ive never seen one done like it since, not in a bad way just that it was , at the time, unique ;)

Nothing to do with strategy ?? :D thats what game catergory GalCiv falls under!! All the titles i mentioned, (with the exception of M.U.L.E, possibly), fall under the '4X' game catergory :)

Thanks to MOO3's failure we lost a few very good games , Imperium Galactica 3, STARS - Supernova Genesis to name a couple, the publishers all got cold feet, which is a shame really.
Id also like to mention Space Empires as well but ive never been lucky enough to play it.

Space Empires III was good, IV never caught on as much probably due to extremely excessive micromanagement.
